At Dixon's Fair I bought a Berks style stock with the severe roman nose, a barrel and a lock. I am chawing at the bit to start building it but I got one question, what do I do first? I mean, should I get the barrel fit right(the channel is cut, but needs some fine tuning, then do the lock inletting and then shape the rest of the stock or am I all ferhoodled?

You better go buy a "how to" book. Others will chime in and clue you in as to which books are the best.

Forgot to mention, I alreday have The Art of Building a Pennsylvania Longrifle by Dixon

That's a great book. Start at the beginning and follow each chapter, if it pertains to your gun. Usually, fitting the barrel and shaping the tang are first.

Greenville is on the top of my list right now then Shumways And if you have ANY ? ask there is no dumb :m2c: ?

now that i'm back from the weekend fair at dixons i have all my parts but ram rod pipes.... i did my barrel first then my lock....cause i had my stock preshaped with just the ram rod hole drilled and barrel and tang inletted fer me so the barrel can only go in one place....i will do my trigger next cause i have my lock inletted and know where my trigger will go....and i know where my trigger guard will go after my trigger is in....the butt plate will be done last so i know my LOP from my trigger .................bob

Building a rifle is done in steps, each of which sets things up for the next step.
As the books on building will explain, it goes something like this:
Until the barrel is in place, you won't know where the breech plug will be located. The breech plug and the ramrod hole dictate where the lock goes. The lock dictates where the trigger and the sideplate goes. The trigger sets up where the butt plate goes...and so on.

In other words....Yes, start with the barrel. :) :)

Zonie,
My greatest coup was when a good friend of mine tried to build a rifle using one of the most beautiful pieces of curley maple I had seen and attempted to put the buttplate on first and botched the job. He sold me the stock blank and buttplate for $5 in a fit of rage and I basically cut off his handiwork and proceeded to build my 11 year old son a scaled down J.Henry trade rifle using a reject barrel (I cut off 6" and the flaw, the stock and buttplate.
