Building short N.W. Trade Gun ...

This will be another long drawn out build most likely but if I dont start it now I'll lose these pics .....So ....starting a short N.W. Trade gun.build . Its a short cherry stock that I could not use for a customers gun because of the sap wood near breech and its a bit short at muzzle and a piece will need to be added , see pic, but it'll be good enough for the fat hill jack that'll end up using it for home defense .... Me

26" long , 24 ga. barrel ...hundred year old barrel blank . Was originally made in Belgium for making double barrels , hence the giant lug under breech . I breeched it and put flats on it ... Funny , a friend of mine wanted two of these but when delivered he didn't like them . No biggy , no hard feelings at all but I think Itll be nice . Little bend here , file there , it'll be right as rain. Oh well , to each their own . This fuke will be fun for bunnies and such ....wish it were 32-34" barrel but , is what it is ... and cost me $26 ! LOL ....I'm a cheap $#it !

I bent the tag straight in the vice then cut it to length and file the end square and with little taker on end ...

Measure width of Bree h bolster , divide by 2 , with your centerline mark mark the width of bolster ....simply put breech up there and scribe line for length . Staying inside these lines chisel straight down to depth . On most barrels I can just go down to barrel bed depth but this barrel I made from the old shotgun blank with the huge lug , the bottom of boltster and bottom of barrel ain't parallel so go to measurement ... I makes breech face and touch hole spot too before rebreech

Stay in lines , just chisel down to depth ...it tapers by itself and you'll fit it later ...

Now ... Take a file and taper the bolster and tang sides .... It doesnt have to be tapered very much either . After seeing other guns with bolster untapered I tried it a few times but ...although it works you have to be very careful when putting the untapered bolster down so i went back to tapering them , just like the originals are ... When your puttin the bolster down you just keep watching the sides of the barrels for gaps in the barrel channel and watching the center line , take off wood on the side you want it to move too , back and forth , and if it looks even , little bit off each side ...go slow ... Straight down with chisel ...
