I finally got a peice of mahogony that drilled out nicely. i decided to try and load from it before i put any more work into it . The balls push out fine, with no real effort, but by the time they get to the barrel the balls are no longer centered on the patch, and in some instances, have actaully come off the patch halfway. Any suggestins to fix this? is it because it isn't polyurethaned yet so it is not smooth enough to transfer the ball, or am i doing something else wrong? anyone else get this problem?

On my loading block ( I used a scrap piece of pine to experiment with, and it worked so well I'm still using it) I made sure to radius the top edge of the hole pretty generously, and countersunk the bottom edge very lightly, so that it will center up on the barrel. Lastly, I fold up an old towel and put the block on it to seat the balls in the holes. This pushes them out the bottom ever so slightly, and makes it easier to get them started down the bore.

Remember, this is an art form, not an exact science!

Enjoy today,

Joel

My block is no thicker than the diameter of the ball. That way, the ball doesn't have to "travel" to get to the barrel. It's just about touching it when I place the block on the barrel.

thanks claude, i would bet that is my problem, i am shooting a .36, so it is small to begin with, and i am using 3/4 wood. I wanted to try smaller, so i did wood just about 1/2, but still too much. it would have been cool though because i was using the stake i caught my last muskrat with this year. Oh well, sentimental stuff is always harder. thanks for your reply
