Hello all,

I am just starting out in the MZ world after years of bowhunting. I have a Win. X150 Mag. in .50 w/26" barrel. I will be hunting blacktail deer and Roosevelt elk here in SW Washington. My question is "what bullet weight and how much powder"? My first inclination is to go with a heavy bullet, 350 to 450 grains, pushed as fast as is safe. I plan to limit my shots to 100 yards. I am leaning toward the Power Belt 444 grain. I don't have the finances to shoot dozens of combos searching for MOA groups, but I would appreciate some opinions on "heavy vs. light" and "fast vs. medium".

Thank you,

Steve

Nice to meet a newcomer! Unfortunately, we do not discuss modern muzzleloaders here. This board is for the discussion of traditonal guns. You might try Huntamaerica or one of the other lists where your type of gun is discussed. Sorry!

I have not hunted these types of animals with a smoke pole ..yet? But that cambo looks to be fine. I would look at keeping your groups small. If ya are going after big critters I would want the most accurat load possiable. I wouls also check out hornadas new sabot, the SST looks to be awsome! The web site could give ya more info. Good luck KOZ :front:

The 444PB would work well as would the 300SST/Shockwave bullets. I also like the 460 No Excuses bullet. With any of those you could use something around 90 to 100gr of 777 if the manufacturer allows. I shoot the 460NE with 90gr of loose 777 2f and get excellent results out past 100 yards.
Good luck.

Not wanting to offend, but as Runner pointed out we're traditional here. Nothing with the words "Magnum", "Nitro" or "Express" in our hunting pouches.

Now, a stout 120 gr of FFg and a 0.490" patched round ball would work and be LOTS cheaper in the long run. :winking:

Good luck with the elk in any case.
