Has anyone tried the Buffalo Bullets, or any others in their 1858 Remington .44? If so, how do they shoot? How much powder can you get in and still get a wad and then a bullet? Are they as accurate as rd balls? Any info Appreciated. I just won an auction for a Euroarms target model 1858 and thought i might give them a try. I have always just used rd balls in my revolvers.

I have tried some Lee mold .44 and .36 conicals, .44's in the Rems. They work ok, depending on chamber size or make Pietta, Uberti, Armi San Poalo(ASP), Euroarms...is how difficult they load. Some the bullets the heel drops right in some don't. And Colts seem harder to load less room. I jus t got 50 boolits from a friend in Vermont to try out. Hallow base flatpoint.

Anyhow the standard conicals were not as accurate for me as the round ball are. But fun to shoot.

Just got some of the BigIron bullets in .36 cal both 80 and 100 grain. Have'nt tried them yet but I'm confident they will load straight as most of the bullet slides right into the chamber until it gets to a rim of lead at the top. Tried the buffalo bullets and they were awful. When I try the BigIron bullets I'll post how they performed. I know MEC tried them and they did pretty well.

An artical from a gun magazine about 30 years back said to try the conical backwards, shoots like wad cutters and makes nice round holes in the target. Like anything ells you need to experiment to see what works.

Some say that a number of original Walker Colts blew up because people loaded conicals backwards.....

Probably the cylinder and barrel didn't allign and the forcing cone was under cut. You check this out with a tool called a rangerod(Brownell's has them). Shouldn't be a problem with a ball unless lead spitting gets really bad.

MEC has thought on it, thinks SHAPE CHARGE effect mighta been tha culprit, an when ya lookit them old pickett bullets loaded backwrds ya see how it mighta happend.

Ifin its THAT much outta line tha thing has a third er more offa ball cause tha sharp pickett slug woulda been self alignin, hittin tha forcin cone you'd think it woulda been too far out fer tha hammer ta hit tha cap.

Maybe a real hard bullet and the gun way out of time might cause a problem. I had a 58 put the ball at 6 o’clock into the loading plunger and never hurt the gun. The lead ball was not a ball anymore.

No? Thas jus a little hard stop! Was'nt a ball no more ya say? :)

Yup, i spose ya COULD finda way ta make one go boom, trouble is, ya'd needa ORIGINAL :shocked2: an all, ta blow up.

Gotta extra 100000 around ta play with?

I/ve shot the big Iron bullets in 36 and believe they will work just as well in .44. Here are some loads with bullets cast from a Dixie Iron scissor mould in the pattern of the moulds that came with the original revolvers. also some with 200 grain Lee bullets. Both provided better accuracy than expected and much better than the bullets cast from the brass decorator moulds sold for case sets.first number is velocity. second number is extreme spread for six rounds.
180 Grain Traditional Bullet
28 Gr/Vol. Pyrodex P 896 74
28 Grains Goex FFFg 712 45
28 Gr/vol. Swiss FFFg 962 68
200 Grain Lee Bullet .452
22 Grain/Vol. Pyrodex 777 14
28 Grain Goex FFFg 764 41
22 Grain Swiss FFFg 785 44
fps=feet per second
* Lower charge of H777 were not consistent.

Tried the BigIron .36 bullets today. Couldn't give them a real test cause I had my son with me but still pleased with them. Loaded just as easy as a ball if not easier. Accuracy, as best as I could tell, was very good. As I said I had my son with me so I kept ranges very short as he is just starting to learn how to shoot. So far I'm very pleased with how they did. Can't wait for the .44 bullets to come out in July.
