OK...you heard it here first !!

For all you frustrated .54cal smoothbore fans who would like to experiment with a shot cup in your cylinder bores...the Burger King shake called the Oreo Sundae holds the answer !!

Due to the size of the Oreo cookie particles broken up and mixed into the vanilla ice cream, the plastic straw Burger King uses is a huge, strong 1/2" plastic straw so big its nicknamed "the pipe".

In my constant interest to bring the MLF members new and exciting information, I made the sacrifice on your behalf, bought & consumed the 1000 calorie treat today just so I could get the straw for analysis and report back to you all!

Rinsed it off and brought it home...its huge for sure and when I slid it into the muzzle of a .54cal smoothie there's just barely a little wiggle room left. You can cut 4 two inch lengths from a straw...then cut 6 to 8 slits down it's length...start a wad a couple inches into the bore, slide the cup down on the wad, pour in the shot, add an OS card and seat it all down.

So there you go...a commercial source of a ready fit shot cup material for anyone who may be interested...could possibly talk your local Burger King manager into selling you a box of them, or back track to the manufacturing source that the Burger King chain buys from and order direct.

Durn, I knew I forgot something while I was there !

Do they put them pipes out where ya can grab a hand full at a time? :hmm:

Without the calories, I mean!!

Came on the tray with the shake...the big straw itself is sort of a royal blue but it came individually wrapped/sealed in white paper...you'll just have to go 'case' your local Burger King

Roundball,
would there be any chance that piece of plastic would stay in the bore? As in the overpowder card blows through the 'pipe' and the plastic stays?

I would have to believe the cup would be blown out by the force of the black powder and the over powder card combined, but will await the consensus of those who have actually tried this.

Well, it's slightly smaller in diameter than a tight fitting OP card, Oxyoke wad, Cushion wad, etc so I personally would fee pretty safe that anything above those wads would leave the bore...cheap promotional shotgun shells often don't use a full plastic wad/cup, they just use a base wad and a loose mylar 'wrap'.
But we all know the typical lawyer has a 'green attitude' about some opportunities so let me state for the record, satisfy yourselves on any concerns about these things, don't take my word for it.

Hey, if guys can dream up things like aligning the patch weave with the front sight the same way every time, I figure this is child's play

I suppose each store is set up different. Hopefully mine here will have super pipes that will fit my 20 bore trade gun.

Thought about that too...I'd bet shot cups for a .20ga might be able to be made by cutting the plastic hulls off of empty shotgun shells...doesn't matter what gauge hull you use as you'll have to cut it twice lengthways to remove enough of a sliver so the diameter will then squeeze small enough to slide inside a .62cal bore...should work

Any minute now I,m expecting to hear of some guy in trad dress and a smoke pole holding burger kings up and making of with their straws :rotf:
Joking aside us M loaders are an innovative lot are we not :hatsoff:

Two words; restaurant supply. I guarantee that these things aren't made exclusively for BK.

Even though I don't have a .54 smoothbore (.56 and .62) I eagerly await the outcome. Sort of like a Mythbusters episode for MLF.

I'm not sure if they'd work or not, but again this stuff has to be available in different diameters as it's what most taps/tooling comes in.

I suspect that these items, straws, mailing tubes, would lack the toughness needed for use as a shot cup. I would be afraid of a melty, nasty mess in the bore. Whatever you put down there is going to be subject to some intense heat. All plastics are not created equal. Compare a modern shotgun wad to a drinking straw and you will see the difference in how “tough” they are. Cardboard tubing may have some merit if you can find it the same diameter as a properly fit wad. “Treat” the tube by soaking in your favorite lube. Seal the powder end with a overpowder card sized for a tight fit inside the tube. Add a cushion wad, then shot. I would seal the top with tape that would be removed before ramming and then use a normal overshot card to keep everything in place. You could even add a paper sleeve glued to the base to hold the powder charge. Crimp, fold or tie the end of the paper. This would be removed for the cardboard shot tube before it is rammed. This is pretty close to the Rackheath cartridge that was used in England in the 1850’s except with the addition of the cardboard tube. The cardboard shotcup should give pretty tight patterns.

on the 20ga wads. when we've blown the crimps off 12ga and even 20ga hulls, i slice em up to use in hevishot loads in my .62 (navy arms barrel with choke tubes, and home-retrofitted for the t/c flinter). they dont protect 100% im sure, but they do work, and the chromed lined bore is still shiny as new, so they probably would work for you guys with lead.

or, you could just buy a bag of wads.......

i think those straws would make good sabots for 54 rifles too. you could shoot all kind of stuff with em. even rocks
