Why does Dr5x always "SHOUT" at people in his answers? I thought this was a peaceful sight where people can learn from each other humanely. Maybe his computer is stuck on CAPS!
Dutch has vision issues and he has some problems seeing the text. That's the reason I use the largest sized font when I expect Dutch to be reading my posts. He's not shouting at us, he's just trying to have text he has a chance of proof reading. Lets be friendly and allow Dutch to use caps.

I assume you are speaking about my allowing Dr5x to use large size print in his posts?
I can only speak for myself but no, I don't have any favorites on the forum. I also don't have anyone I dislike on the forum.
I do allow Dutch to use large type and I also allow people responding to his posts to use large type. As others have mentioned Dutch has problems with his vision and at the age of 91 that's to be expected.

When you hit the age of 90 or 91, I'll also allow you to use large type when you post on the forum. :)

There are a plethora of reasons for selling other than to simply get rid of it. All are valid and legitimate, but most, at their core, come down to the basic assumption of wanting the money more than the rifle.

Iom wondering how much a bulged barrel really affects accuracy especially with a RB. I'm assuming a bulge just forward of the powder area, and there are many more inches of barrel between that and the muzzle. A RB doesn't have the opportunity to get tipped off axis the way a pointed bullet does. Intuitively it would seem it could get re-swaged back in to shape and proceed on its' merry way without any detrimental effects.

Charles Burton at FCI deliberately makes the muzzles of his barrels .001-.002" tighter than the bottom half, and many report stellar accuracy with his barrels. That's effectively a "bulged barrel" as per the original premise.
IT ISN'T HOW THE BALL MANAGES THE BULGED BARREL IT'S HOW THE PRODUCED GASSES FLY PAST THE BALL WHEN IT GETS TO THE BULGE.
MOST BULGES ARE LOCATED WHERE THE SHORT STARTER LEFT THE PATCHED BALL , 6 OR SO INCHES AWAY FROM THE MUZZLE.
NO BALL FIRED PAST THAT BULGE WILL ACT WELL FOR YOU.
ONE LOCAL GENT BOUGHT A BEAUTIFUOL RIFLE AND COULDF NOT DO ANYTHING WELL WITH IT.
I TOLD HIM TO CHECK FOR THE DREADED BULGE. HE FOUND THREE IN DIFFERENTPLACES DOWN THE BORE..
HE HAD GOTTEN SUCH A GREAT DEAL ON THIS USELESS RIFLE THATHE WAS STILL AHEAD OF THE GAME FINANCIALY AFTER HE HAD THE BARREL REPLACED.

This is mostly intended for Folks not on the ML Forum.
I doubt many riflemen would happily sell a deadly Accurate rifle.
Reasons for selling a rifle:
Have a more accurate rifle
Cannot get accuracy out of this rifle
Reasons for no Accuracy:
Ignorance of any idea what is required to produce any good performance
Barrel ruined because of ignorance
Barrel ruined by carelessness
Bulged barrel caused by not seating a patched ball before firing
Fastest way to ruin a barrel?
See line above.
What is a slower way to ruin a barrel?
Not cleaning at the end of any firing and letting corrosion prosper.
What is the usual reason for selling a rifle?
Can't get any accuracy for the above variety of reasons.

And there you are. "Boy, I have gotten a great deal on a Whizzer Bang Bang .50 Super Deer Killer hunting Rifle. made by an unknown gunsmith.

HOW TO PREVENT JOINING THE PARADE OF FOLKS TRY TO ACHIEVE ACCURACY OUT OF THIS GREAT DEAL.
All a rifle is is the barrel. Nothing more. Nothing less
All the rest is just an apparatus to make it fire and to hold itsteady while aiming.
Pretty appearance is nice and frequently inspiring but is most appreciated about wall hangers.
A good unbelted barrel is about al you need. It can handle a surprising amount of pitting from old uncorrected corrosion created by the prior owner. It CANNOT handle a bulged barrel. There is seldom any sign of the bulge on the outside of the barrel so how do we check the inside of the barrel?
Place a couple of patches on the Jag end of the ramrod or thick enough to keep the patched ramrod sliding effortlesslydown the length of the barrel.. Preferably it will slowly slide down the length of the bore with just the weight of your arm.
Observe closely. Does it slide down at the same even speed the entire length OR at one point speeds up fore 2 or more inches and then slows down again? No speedup you might very well have a good barrel. if it does speed up you may have the greater part of a crowbar. It will never shoot accurately. Don't buy that rifle. If the person selling won't allow this test just walk away. He knows what's wrong and doesn't want the buyer to find out. He is a thief. Never buy anything from him.
I have had too many people come to me with a "Great deals" that urn very sour when the hidden bulge is discovered. Wonderful as you are you can't work around this. If you can please let me know how you did it.

Having been married I assume everything that goes wrong is my fault..
I wanted to warn members of the congregation about one BIG risk in buying a used rifle and a test to make sure you don't buy a damaged one.
I mediately get a load of responses giving me a large number of reasons fo selling a rifle. I never sold one. It would be like selling Old Red the family dog.I always gave mine away.I even got a post saying you could still get accuracy out of a bulged barrel/
I know you people can read or you would be troubled fo walking into the Ladies room.
Why do I mislead folks in the wrong direction?
I had just wanted to show hem a simple method of buying a gun with a ruined barrel and one would think Ihad come out against barrels or the act of selling. Does anyone know what the simple test actually is o does the Hindenburg Disaster somehow get in there and confuse things..
I have thought I was reasonably clear buI apparently am not.
My apology to one and all.I can't read what I write (Makes you jealous/) I have my computer read my posts and yours and everything seems clear and then the responses come inland I begin to doubt my ability.
If I write that it is not a good practice to tie the laces of shoe number one to the laces of shoe number two I will get a post saying I am against Shoes
or waling or exercise or Why the Hinderburg crashed.
If you read, please try to decipher the hidden message cleverly hidden right up front.
It has to be my fault and I apologize to all who I have misled,

It is harder to read all capital letters than to read lower case letters.
When I note I am using all caps I try to quickly change it to lower case/ If someone found that offensive. I agree with him. I hate it too.

The reasons for selling a gun could have included a cause that was just discussed several posts back. That being "Old Eyes". You have some decent rifles(and pistols) but You're getting old. The kids could care less about them. You dearly love them but it's for the best to find them a good home. So you sell them and not becausr there is anything wrong with them. It's your age not the guns. Older eyes no bulging barrel!

I wasn't seeking reasons for selling or donating or leasing or bequeathing a rifle. I was showing a simple test to avoid buying a ruined one.

i apparently can't write clearly.I may go back to crayons.

Dutch my brother you are doing fine. I understood everything you were trying to get across in your posts. Some people like to argue for arguments sake. I have not come across the barrel bulge except once. I knew it was bulged to begin with. Honest seller. When i go shopping for ML rifles or pistols (not very often) i carry my bore light and a screw together range rod with some patches in my pocket. Most sellers have no problem letting you look down the bore or running a patch down the bore. Those that say "NO" are the ones i walk away from most times.
Dutch if you want to write using crayon brother i'll read it. I turned 68 in November and am not far behind you. CARRY ON and SEMPER FI.

Why does Dr5x always "SHOUT" at people in his answers?

Dr5x, shout at me all you want, I haven't been here long, but I understand what it is to mature in life and compensate for ailments. I feel most here are a common people, not in a bad way. Writing ethics can be over looked and accepted when one takes time to understand. Dr5x has 20 years on me and I am in hopes to walk the earth that long, and I wished I knew half of what he forgot.
Meaning not to point fingers or no hard feelings to anyone, but usually there is a reason for everything. I have had the pleasure of learning from everyone on this site from the young inspiring whipper snappers to the old crusty long hunter , target masters and builders.
Regards

I have scarfed all the used and abused guns I could in the past. I have more pleasure in making something out of nothing than actually shooting. I do enjoy seeing what I have done to watch some of the specimens being shot by the owner. Perfectionist, I am not, practical I try to be.

Naw, erhunter, sometimes the responses are slow and pretty well down the line, but I see not a response that ridicules or demeans your character, which is pretty hard to, or not to do, in writing. Like the terrible tweet. May not mean a thing, but the meaning is all in the recipient. Come on in, appreciate your post.

This is becoming interesting.

Dutch made some really good points about gasses flying past the ball at the bulged spot, 6"-8" down from the muzzle, and presumably 20"+ up from the breech. Presumably acceleration forces that far down bore wouldn't be enough to swage the ball in to the bigger bore diameter, so that it could re-swage itself back down. Effectively, this is a smaller version of a jug choke on a smoothie.

So let's think about revolving cylinder guns. They have a gap in front of the cylinder, and then a forcing cone as the bullet enters the barrel. This is effectively the same thing as a barrel bulge, and many 4"-6" pistols are very very accurate. So I'm wondering if a different dynamic might not be in play, such as the uniformity of the shape of the bulge, as, those generally happened under uncontrolled conditions.

Dutch, the fact that a person comes on this form and rudely attacks a member who has pretty much never done anything but try to help less knowledgeable folks speaks volumes. I for one consider myself very fortunate to be able to benefit by your experience. Thank you!

68 IS AN ENORMOUS DISTANCE BEHIND ME.
ALMOST EVERYTHING WORKED.
NOW IT EITHER DOESN'T WORK OR YOU COULDN'T CARE LESS IF IT DID OR DIDN'T.
I enjoy writing. a good turn of phrase.
O experienced a rare treat for any writer was to come across a chunk of writing that rings all your bells. You know this guy is right on, His head is nowhere near any dark places, What a genius and then discover it was something I had written in the past.
I've also, more rarely had the reverse treat when the stuff I was read was way off base and badly done and again discovered it was me.
Thank you. I have several boxes of crayons waiting in the wings.

Nobody attacked me. Everybody seems to have missed the point I was trying to make. A simple way to check out a barrel on a preowned rifle. NMo more than that and people assume I am agains t selling rifles.
Quel dommage.

Somebody quoted heraclitus on here a day or so ago. I really need that quote as it was important to me

Dutch, please keep writing. No complaints here. If you have to switch to crayons, be sure and use the big box with all the colors.
