I know I can order BP from various online stores, but have to order usually 5 lb min and pay a $27 hazmat fee. I went to Bass Pro who use to sell it and no longer do along with Gander Mountain and all gun stores I have contacted. I only need a pound and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion to where I can buy it in the Cincinnati-Dayton area.I know I will also have to pay a part of that Hazmat fee if buying at store.

Take a minute and asess your situation..
If you REALLY only need one can try to share an order with someone...
If you shoot any at all you need more then one can..
Have you considered Pyrodex? It works pretty good and is redally available....
I bought a 25lb case of Kik real black in a mix of FFg and FFFg cuz although I choose to shoot Pyrodex as my standard load its not like the KIK Black will ever go bad....

I agree with Wattsy... if you're only looking to find a propellent readily available... then consider a PB substitute like Pyrodex.

BTW.. there is nothing wrong with choosing this propellent... it just has different performance characteristics like any other BP alternative.

Otherwise you'll probably have to bite the bullet like most of us if you're committed to using and leveraging real Black... purchasing from the mainstream online-vendors.

There are multiple varieties of BP...i.e. Goex, KiK, Graf & Sons. and Swiss...and some others I am guessing I have not yet experienced. This forum should provide good advise and council.

Best wishes on finding what works best for you and your shooting scenario!

I can never understand this "only need a pound stuff" thats only a 100 shots at 70 grns. Just go to Powder Inc. an order 5lbs of KIK, it's only $111.50, and this INCLUDES HAZMAT AND SHIPPING. When you add up gas and paying retail at around $30.00 a pound for Goex. it's a whole lot cheaper just to go ahead an get 5 or 10lbs. than keep on making a trip to get a pound of blackpowder. and if you get 10lbs it's only $171.00 another 5lbs is just $60.00 more dollars! and Goex is hard to get now since the accident. Btw, The KIK is just as good if not better than Goex.

if youve been using real black, you wont like pyrodex. it doesnt not come close to the level of performance. pyrodex is more expensive and less effective!

Another consideration in the cost of powder is the cost of operating a car to go get it. A 4-door sedan will cost in the neighborhood of $.70 per mile. (This is the cost of the vehicle, insurance, maintenance, fuel etc. over a 80,000 mile life) At this rate a 38.6 mile round trip will equal the cost of the $27 hazmat fee so I find it cheaper to pay the fee and let UPS deliver it to my door.

Driving to a store to buy one pound of powder makes that pound very expensive.

All this discussion and still no answer to your question????
Anyone have an answer??? Where to buy powder in the Cincinnati- Dayton Area.
Cost isn't a worry if your having fun!!!!!If it is ,,how would we ever have fun!!!!!
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass,,but learning to dance in the rain...

SW Ohio?
You are almost sitting on the front lawn of the NMLRA hq at Friendship, Indiana. There are quite a few ml dealers in that part of the country and many-many avid ml shooters. Even if you are not an NMLRA member, I'll betcha is you call the main office they will be able to direct you to a dealer who can fix you up just fine.
Ignore the guys who suggest fake powders. They have been sniffing to many fumes. Stick with real bp.

Along the same lines, try and find a BP club or rendezvous. There's usually a trader there that carries it.

Did a quick google search and turned up a fair number of Ohio events.

Log Cabin Shop in Lodi Ohio sells powder and their museum of American Military Arms is almost worth the trip by itself.

If you live near the Cincinnati area, when the NMLRA is having their big shoots in Friendship, Indiana, they sell powder to members at reasonable prices.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. When I do order or buy it I will buy a several lbs. Next question I have used only GOEX in BP but see several other brand like Swiss and Kik. I know Swiss is but what about Kik? What accident Armakiller?

Goex had an explosion at thier plant sometime in 2011. Its caused them problems getting Goex 2ff to folks. KIK is made in Slovenia and is around 10 to 12% hotter than Goex. I buy it because it's more accurate, causes less fouling in my rifle and it's less expensive than Goex.

I have shot and do own Kik.. based on cost and preformance, it IS my choice when buying "real black".

Not far from Lima Ohio there is a small outfit called S&S Muzzle Loading.. he will sell ya all the Goex ya want!Plus he has ALL sorts of stuff for traditional Mler's and buys and sells rifles as well. P.M. me if ya want his #
IF ya don't mind a road trip the guys in the Log Cabin Shop in Lodi, THAT'S THE place to go! They have a VERY nice museum as well as a library and ALL the BP stuff you'd ever want.. and maybe some ya wouldn't want!

Give them guys at The Log Cabin a try, they are great to deal with, never bougth any powderbut have bought other stuff. If I ever get up Lodi ohio I am going to stop and see that place.

Its about 20 miles Northwest of Lima, a little town called Rockford. I generally call S&S and order what I want.. he then brings it each month to the local Tri-State Gun show at the (In Lima) Allen county fairgrounds.I go and buy it from him and take a tour around the gun show as well...

My local club, Dayton Muzzle Loaders in New Carlisle sells to club members, 1 lb $14. A membership is $24 a year (range access). that's a better deal than paying a Hazmat fee. :hatsoff:
