The irony is that, it was men like the one pictured that caused the era to disappear. That's why the Mountain Man era was so short, really lasting only 20 years. They trapped the beaver and shot the buffalo almost to extinction, decimated the natives, and opened the west to millions.
 
Ithink style change to hats made out of bugs and Sharps/rolling block of a few years later contributed, not to mention Indian over hunting and us government policy to exterminate the big shaggies.
Most eras were pretty short. I recall a trail guid from 1859 tell all along the trail people could resupply. Less then twenty years after MM time the west was pretty grown up.
But how long was it between Booneville of the wild frontier and statehood for Kentucky?
