Hey Y’all!
Greetings from California! I am new to the forum and to BP adventures. So new I haven’t even bought or shot my first BP gun! LOL. I am really interested in getting started with BP shooting, having done a lot of pistol and rifle shooting in the military and my current job. I am doing as much research as I can before making my first purchase. The way I figure it, a Flintlock is the only safe option for gun ownership in this crazy state! It is literally the weapon the Founding Fathers had in mind with the Second Amendment! They can’t take that away right!?

The 18th century is a favorite subject of mine and I am looking to build my own Brown Bess. I only have a little experience with gun building, but want to give it a go. I went pretty big with an 18th century pirate outfit for a few years but feel I need to move on to something else and BP seems like a good fit for me. I am finishing my Bachelor’s degree in December and I think a Brown Bess kit is going to be my graduation gift/new hobby project. I am looking forward to making all the shooting accessories that go along with BP shooting as well.

Black Powder shooting is an interesting thing to get into, yet kind of mysterious as there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of “BP 101” stuff around. There is a range that allows BP shooting not far from the house, but shooting supplies are very scarce here. I have not been able to find anyone that sells supplies south of LA. The gun show that comes to town every few months seems like it’s going to be my best chance to get stuff.
I am eyeing Brown Bess kit from either Perdersoli or Rifle Shoppe for my first gun, but I am open to suggestions. Thanks for letting me join up!

:hatsoff: Howdy and welcome to the forum.First i would see what persona i would like to be.Mountianman, long hunter, etc. Then i would chose the rifle to fit the persona.Flintlock,percussion.French and Indian time period or the fronttier days.Do some research first. There's a lot of suppliers out there.Track of the wolf is a good one.Hope i helped a little. Griz

Welcome to the Forum, and be prepared to become addicted when you fire that 1st shot !
It's not like modern firearms use at all....it IS in and of its self an art form.
You'll likely end up with more than 1 BP gun (we all did) so "personna" is something you can back burner if you want to.......also may want to try a ready built before wading into buying a kit.

Best wishes to you and wish you a lifetime of enjoyment !!

Hello from another CA resident - I'm located between Monterey and San Jose and there is not much in the way of BP supplies here also. I get most of my "stuff" via mail order.
For your first rifle I would suggest a good used or new cap lock. Once you get the hang of it then get yourself a good flinter. Caliber for the cap lock I would go with a .45 and for the flinter I would go .54. Enjoy the "adventure" :v
