What size caps you using on a 1858 Remington?
I shot mt Pieta last sun. and I was using #11 german made caps. I had a problem with them coming lose or falling off. My manual doesnt say what size to use. Just wondering since I dont have any #10 caps to try.
Theres no room to tighten these up with needlenoze pliers plus I dont like screwing around with the caps once its loaded.
Other than the caps coming lose it sure is a blast to shoot.

My Uberti takes #12 and my Euroarms takes #10

On both I need to give the skirts a little squeeze. Stops them falling off on recoil.

In my Pieta I use #10 caps and they work just fine! I also use them on my 1861 colt

Dixie Gun Works catalog recommends #11's for the Pieta's they sell. I have the same revolver but made by Uberti. I have had the same problem with #11's falling off while firing. Real potential for chain firing when that happens. The RWS 1075's work better, CCI #10's stay on but are so tight you sometimes will get a mis-fire and have to double hit the cap. The real pain about the Remington's, is the way those nipples are buried in the rear of the cylinder, you can't get a capper in there and have to put all of the caps on by hand. As such, my Remington doesn't get the range time my Colts do.

My Uberti Remington uses #10's as well as my Pietta 1860. IMO you have to play around with sizes on every revolver even from the same manufacturer. My 1860 and 1851 are both from Pietta and one uses #10's, the other #11's.

I have an 1851, 1860 Colts and an 1858 Remington. I use #10 on all of them. I may have to use my fingers to cap the Remmy but they don't come off and jam the works like both of my Colts do. I sometimes use #11 but I will pinch them a little to make them more secure.

I have a Pietta 1858 and have had best luck with #11s. Regardless of brand, they seem to work well.

I'm sure glad we cleared this up for you......

LOL yes its clear as a bell now.
Thanks for all the input. My no 11's without pinching them are too lose. I will try some #10's and see which is the best.
15-20 years ago I had an old Colt navy and I used the #10 caps on it. I never had a worry of them coming loose.
I will give the 10's a go and maybe fit thenipples to them.

In my experience wether you use 10s 11s or12s they all can benifit from a little pinch on the skirt but also after they've been shot for a while a little burr will roll over on one side of each nipple ass the hammer don't usually hit squarly on the top surface on the nipple and that burr can make it hard to put the cap on . then when you get the cap on it's loose again making the pinch method all the more necassary . So if your having cap problems check your nipples for burrs . If you got the roll over burrs take the nipple out and carefully chuck it up in a drill and run a file over it . Just my 2 cents kinda spred out
