I shot my new Lyman Plains Pistol today, using Pyrodex P (getting real BP soon) 35 grains, .490 ball, .015 prelubed patch. I notice that on several patches that the middle was almost completely gone. The sides of the patch all looked good. So I am guessing that the powder is burning my patch when fired and I need to get a wad or card?
So what do I need? A Wad or 1/8 Card? Both come in 50 cal and both state they are used over powder in muzzle loading. Thanks for your help. Did a search on this subject and couldn't come up with anything, so if this was asked already please point me to the thread.

A card or a felt wonderwad both could fix the problem. You'll have to try them both to see which works better for you.

A thicker patch would also help.

your patches are pre-lubed with what? if they're just oiled, it might not be enough, and you should soak them yourself in some wonderlube or something. and if they're oiled prelubed patches, of course you gotta keep them from getting dry, they tend to do that.

Thanks for the infor. Patches are lube with Natural Lube 1000. I didn't check to see if the patches were dry or not, guess I was in a hurry to play with my new toy. I used all those up so next time I will be using patches that were stored in a sealed bag. They should be like new, we'll how they work out.

Thanks for the infor. Maybe I'll move up to a .018 patch. Using .015 right now. I would hate to order a bag of Wads and find out I am still shooting bad :haha:

mwindy, you can always find a scrap of 1/2" pipe and sharpen the end to make a punch and create some trial wads out of various materials before buying a whole bag of them... milk cartons are pretty good for some guns, pasteboard for others, etc... just stay away from synthetics!

Dumpster Diving for Accuracy! :haha:

When I was working up a load for mine, I had the same problem, even worse, patchs trashed. I changed to a tougher thinner patch, not only solved the week patch problem but improved pattern.
I think my patch was getting dammaged while loading as well, as it was too thick.

Thanks for the infor. I tried it and it works great. Starting a new post about it.
