Anybody know of any rondys in North Carolina? I've been googling until I can't see straight, and the only thing I find is Civil War re-enactment stuff, which just doesn't float my boat. I'd like to find something kinda close that's into pre-CW... not necessarily Rocky Mtn. Fur Trade stuff, but you know, a good 'ol rondy with lots of tipis, buckskin clothing, beards and front-stuffers type of thing. I'm in the central part of NC, between Charlotte and Greensboro... anything within a few hours would be great.

I'd like to see one too, if it was close.

FYI, there is a muzzleloader club an hour or so below Raleigh called the Lafayette Longrifles...I think they have a couple of events a year but don't think they're on the scale of a "rondy"...more local "club" oriented I think.

For example I think they have a weekend thing every January and I drove down/found it a few years ago in January, to see how close the club was to where I live, what it was like, etc...as I recall there were two tents up for the weekend event, 8-10 shooters...period dress preferred but not mandatory...something like that...probably just a local club thing...3-4 hour round trip for me so I've never been back from the point of view of joining the club...I shoot at a little place out in the country 30 minutes from my house

I saw a web site for that club I think... might not be bad to check out. Thanks for the info. I'll keep my eyes and ears peeled, and let you know if I find anything.

Anybody else have any info?

Maybe We/I/Someone should start one? How does one start up a rendezvous and grow it into something people will want to come and enjoy?

The French Broad Rifles, in Marshall, NC hold a "Primitive Weekend" each October, usually the 1st weekend in the month. Woodswalk, Seneca Run, Mountain Man aggregate...'hawk and knife throwing...like Roundball's club, period dress encouraged, not required...dress ranges from full skins to Nikes...this Fall, we had 35 registered shooters.
We are at least an hour and a half west of Charlotte, but some of our attendees come from S.C., Georgia and Tenn, so they don't find the distance daunting....if you're interested, your invited...I'm club Secretary/Treasurer, and a private e-mail to me on the Forum will get you on our special events mailing list...Hank

Hi Static,

as Roundball mentioned, there is a club down near Fayetteville called the Lafayette Longrifles . It's actually in Fuquay-Varina. We host a shoot pretty much every month with the exception of Dec. Roundball mentioned a time in Jan. and that would be our "Cold Toes" shoot. Sometimes we get a lot of people and sometimes not ::. We have hosted the NC State Muzzle LOading shoot for the last three years  and hopefully we'll be doing it again in 2005. Our biggest shoot other than the State Shoot is in Sept. for our fall shoot. This year we had RG Absher(sp?) there for some live 18th cent. music along with plenty of food and very good people and we raffled off a beautiful .45 cal rifle made by one of the guys in our group. We are a small club but anyone is invited to come and shoot. Period dress is not required and we have camping available but no electricity. We have a vey nice covered range and a decent woodswalk. We also have a small tavern where the lunches and sometimes dinner is served. We would love to have you for a visit. My e-mail is [email protected]. Where do you live? I live in Greensboro and it takes about 2 hours to get down there. We have 4-5 members in the triad area.

One other thing you might be interested in, is the Guilford Courthouse Re-enactment. It is held the third weekend in March and it is pretty big. Lots of groups and sutlers. It goes from Friday night to Sat and everyome is welcome.

Hank, I do believe we have met. If you have been to LLR before, I was the luck guy who had his two daughters with him who happened to be shooting better than their old man:: :redthumb:. I can't wait to come on down to the French Broad Rifles and burn some powder with you guys.

Thanks for the responses guys! I live in Salisbury, about an hour South of Greensboro. I appreciate the invitations, and will be e-mailing both of you fine gentlemen for more information on your clubs. Seems like I live too far away to probably attend every meeting/get-together, but am definitely willing to come to them a few times a year.

I read something about the Guilford Courthouse re-enactment, and thought that looked interesting. Do they actually do any shooting at that? I will have to mark that on my calendar and check it out.

I definitely look forward to burning some powder with you folks in the not-too-distant future.

Hey Static,

In addition to the Lafayette Longrifles (which is basically a blackpowder shooting club, but we have great get togethers as well), the Guilford County Militia is out there, as well as my unit, the Johnston County Militia. I can't speak for Guilford, but my Sergeant has retolod tales of wild F&I renzvous with tactical scenarios in addition to the great Rev War stuff we do. I've yet to hit a tactical, but would love to get to one.

Feel free to email me off-forum ([email protected]) and I might be able to add more to what these other fine gentlemen have to say.

Jon

Guilford Courthouse is a reenactment, so we shoot blanks at each other. THe Lafayette Longrifle gigs are shooting events... not just on the range, but woods walks, etc., as well.

I think the next event I'm going to is Moore's Creek (or Pond.. can never remember), down by Wilmington, not counting the shooting event at LLR this month.

I sure hope you haven;t seen a site for LLR... since I am building one and it's still on my hard drive. :D

Hank, I got your letter (or somebody's letter) from French Broad Rifles, thanks for the info, I'll definitely try to make it up there for a shoot in the near future.

Jon, thanks for the info. Let me see if I can drum up that site I found... hang on...

*Jeopardy music playing...*

Nope, my bad... it was the site for the NCSMLRA. http://ncsmlra.home.att.net/

I'll send you an e-mail off-line to get some more info on LLR. I'm definitely interested in seeing a Rev. War re-enactment, but not sure if stretching a uniform around my big 'ol gut and pretending to be a soldier is my cup of tea... Guilford Courthouse isn't very far from here, so I'll probably really try to make it to that one this year. When do they usually do it? *D'OH, nevermind... just re-read, March. Sorry.*

Thanks again for the info! You guys are getting me stoked to join up with some guys and do some shooting! I can't wait!

Ok gents here we go with all the latest LLR Info.

We will be having our "Cold Toes" shoot this coming 21-23 and anyone is invited to come. Camping is available as is lunch every day. If the weather behaves like it has been, it will be fantastic and not really that "cold" ::

Hank, did I read correctly saying that you are working on the LLR web site? :peace: I sure do hope so since it has been a long time coming. I'm sure we have crossed paths a number of times over the last few years as I know a few of the Johnston Militia people like Shane Limpkins and Jerry Smith from LLR.

As far as the web site for the NCMLRA goes, it's a bit out of date but will hopefully be coming back soon. I should know because I was just voted the new Secretary for 2005. :shocking: I just need to get some info from the past secretary to work things out.

I really do hope that I can meet some of you guys and put faces to names and hopefully burn some powder. If anyone needs directions, please e-mail me and I can get something sent out.

Take care guys and hope to see you on the 22nd.

I got the same problem here in NE NC. Nothing close voo related. Closest one to me is in Va. Ole' Virginia Primitive Riflemen (OVPR) in Surry, Va. Think their web site is OVPR.org or something like that. Spring and fall voo and a club winter camp. I belong to Shenandoah Longrifles. Have to travel to Northern Va. for that. Memorial day voo, labor day voo and a winter camp and club dinner. Small group but growing each year. Don't have to make work parties if you're from far away, just help out at camp (Dog soldiering, ice run, 2 hrs on hawk range etc., whatever works). When I retire to WVa. I'll be closer to more. Good luck finding more voos. I thought there was more out in western NC.

Well, I've been meaning to attend one of the monthly shoots either at LLR or FBR with these fine gentlemen who have sent me info and such... but just haven't had the chance yet. Perhaps March will be the magical month.

Not sure where Surry, VA is... but I have some family who lives up kinda by Richmond... I might be interested in attending something up in that area too. Heck... I'm willing to try to attend just about anything within a few hours drive of here, which puts me in VA, WV, SC, GA, and even eastern TN probably. I'll see if I can find the OVPR site and check it out.

Thanks!

Guys,

For a list of year round Rev War events in the Carolina,

(Okay, one is in VA, but since it is at Colonial Williamsburg, it is okay!)

go to:

http://www.2ndsc.org/frames.html

Click on the calendar and there you are!

Hopefully, I will be seeing y'all at some of these.

I should be at Guilford with the 2nd South. Look for a tall scrawny guy wearing a Pucket bucket. (leather helmet)
Ask for Tommy Lee -- will get a laugh, but they will point me out.

YMHS,
CrackStock

I'm quite a ways from northeastern NC... I'm only 45 minutes north of Charlotte, so that's a pretty good haul for me. You may be closer to LLR than I am... not sure, but that club is in Fuquay Varina, which I would consider pretty close to NE NC (unless you're in Kitty Hawk or something :)

If I hear of anything new, I will definitely post it here, but so far, what you already see in this thread is about it from what I've found.

As far as starting something up... I wouldn't mind doing something like that, but haven't begun anything yet. It would be nice to have something closer to home here... and we have a fantastic range here in Salisbury that would be a good place for a small vous... :hmm: I'm gonna have to start planting some seeds...

The weekend of April 16 & 17, The Fort Dobbs Alliance will hold a 250th anniversary event on the grounds. This will be an F & I Event, and is open to re-enactors. Registration is Friday night, but you can walk on Saturday. This will be a public event, the purpose of which is to raise money to rebuild the Fort, so this won't be an 18 century experience :sorry:. We are hoping to make this an annual event. The intention will be to garrison the fort and give us F & I folks a place to play and get together twice a year. Email me if you have F & I accouterments, and are interested. I'll send you a registration form. Come for the day if you like. Suttlers will be on site.
