I'm going to hunt with a smoothbore for the first time this deer season. When you all use wads and a bare ball how do you carry the wads? Loose in your bag? or in containers in the bag? or what? Loose lubricated cushion wads would grease everything else in the bag it seems to me.
Thanks,
Charlie

FWIW, although I don't use a 'traditional bag', I still need to carry and keep OP wads & OS cards clean and separate...in getting ready for squirrel hunting next month with a .54cal smoothbore, I've decided on an Altoids tin for OP wads (wonderwads) and a smaller #11 caps tin for OS cards

My bag stays kinda greasy anyways, but I put my wads in an old tin snuff can.

Have you tried using just a patched ball? I use a .600 rb and pillow ticking lubed with ballistol and water. I use a loading block and 80 gr. of 3f.
I never was real happy with the wad system for shooting a smoothie.
The nice thing is that by using a loading block it keeps the clutter in the shooting bag to a minimum.

I glue my over powder wad to my fiber cusion wad before lubing the cushion wad. I then carry enough for a days hunt in an antiqued square Altoids tin. The thin overshot wad you can carry in a leather bag or just throw some in the bottom of your pouch.

i just throw all mine together....no problems so far. i have wonderwads, lubed cushion wad, over-shot, and over-powder wads all in the same bag. (i use an empty lead shot bag) and another shot bag for my pre made shot charges (or round balls, as in ur case) in rolled paper. those bags work real nice cuz they're long and not to thick so u can thread the open end threw ur belt loop, pull it threw snug against the contents, and then slide the extra (that u pulled threw ur loop) under the weight of the bag so it will stay there. i usually throw my brass powder horn in with the wads.

Here's what I use in my Traditions .12 ga. fowler, for deer .715 round ball, and tight weave linin .012 diam lubed with either spit or t/c bore butter (wonderlube is the same thing) these balls slide down the bore easily, I tried the wad thing but personally to much stuff to tag along for deer hunting, oh before I forget I also have some handy speed loaders made up useing old plastic winchester hulls I just cut them down to hold the powder charge and patch with ball, its a little tight but then with the patch left long, so all you have to do is twist and pull the patched ball dump the powder and put in the ball cut the patch and slide it home cap it off and your loaded it is quite fast after you practice. bb75

Altoid can, just burn the paint off.

This is my set up when I take my smoothbore deer hunting. Throw my horn around my shoulder and I'm ready to go. The little bag had Tow, a spare flint, and 5-7 round ball.

I carry mine in a "tin" with the paint burned off. The old metal Sucrets tins, Super 8mm film cans, boot waterproofing tins, etc.

Now I guess you'd have to use Altoids tins.

Too bad a "PEZ" dispenser wouldn't work !

That's the ticket!

Here's a deerskin bag coated inside with beeswax for carrying pre-lubed patching, a mints can with the paint burned off and then rubbed with motor oil to carry Moose Snot, and a McCormick vanilla extract bottle with the threads ground off (using a Mizzy wheel) and a cork stopper for moose milk.

Period correct? Nah. But near nuff for my purposes.

I think my mouth contains the best "period correct" lube and powder solvent.

better be careful while out in the woods hunting,if you get a coughing spell and grab the wrong mint box,,,,especially if you take too many wads buy mistake, you may not have enough to continue hunting, unless altoids would work as over poder wads,, :kid:

Thanks for everyone's thoughts and comments. Like lots of 20 ga barrels, mine is undersized. It mikes .602. I wanted to use .60 balls, but the patch has to be really thin which is why I have been interested in the wad/ball combinations. I may wind up with .595 balls and whatever patch will work. Just need some range time to figure it out.

ALTOIDS! Where would we be without those boxes? I wonder what ever happened to all the Edgeworth tobacco boxes I used to have. I have sometimes found small round boxes of hard candy which are useful too. The candy isn't very good for my taste so I can buy them with a clear conscience.

I made a set of small horns with wide openings and pins to hold the plugs in place, one horn held lube/wads the other over powder/shot cards. If I still have them around I will post a pic, I recall someone trying to talk me out of them and don't remember if he did or not.
