I was wondering how some of you carry water into the field? I know canteens are traditional, but they don't seem very handy, especially when going through brush. Also, what do you carry food in? My possibles is only so big and I can't fit it all in there. I use a fanny pack or daypack to carry these items, but I want to go more traditional. Any ideas?

I have an old leather back pack that I use to carry my gear. I have also used the woven pack baskets and my brother always carried a back pack made out of Rain Deer hide (hair on) that looked very good with his mountain man persona.

A canteen that rides "high and tight" is little problem in the field. I have carried a gourd canteen, a kidney canteen, and finally my favorite is a leather canteen I made which I like the most. Very little hassle and handy in this day and age.

my canteen is one of those bota bags made of leather holds bout a quart............bob

Our MZ hunting seasons are in December, thus a bit on the chilly side. I put a thermos of green tea in my day pack. I know it ain't traditional, but it does help you stay on the stand longer.

I go all out picking gear to match my hunting...so when it comes to water for deer hunting, I use "deer park" bottles of water

I drink water from Hot Water Creek, through on of the filtered straws. :: If I could find a bota bag with somethin' other than a plastic nozzle, I'd buy one.

Mr. Ashtar13,
We carry our food and water (plus other odds and ends) in a haversack. Period correct for just about any time frame.

::Do you carry everything in it, or do you carry a possibles bag with the haversack?

I carry my water in my civil war wool covered metal canteen. It goes under the wool greatcoat w/ me.My jerky goes in my possibles bag.I carry a shooting bag aswell. If compelled by law to don hunter orange ,I have a non insulated poncho and hat.I like to hunt period as much as is possible yet I will bow,on occasion,to modern convenience.Jack

I carry a possibles bag as well. It is dedicated to the weapon and all I need for a short hunt, etc. But no reason everything couldn't be put in the haversack, including powder horn.
Best Wishes

I bought a few of those bota bags with the blue nylon cover and threw the cover away and made covers out of deer hide . They look great all I have to do is fill half full toss in the freezer , next day fil the rest of the way up and I've got cold water for a few hours . I've put mine in the freezer at least 250 times and it's still in great shape if you look hard enough you can find them on line with leather covers already on them but I prefere to make my own .They also come in 1 quart and 1 1/2 quart sizes.

I'm not all that traditional when it comes to hunting. With a blaze orange jacket and hat, it is kind of hard to get in the mood. I carry my water in a plastic quart bottle that I rinse out clean, and fill as needed. I personally drink the water any temperature it is, when I'm thirsty I do not need cold water, just water.

I just keep a case of 20 ounce bottles of water on hand...half dozen in the fridge all the time...throw a couple into my equipment vest when I leave to go hunting...
