I am looking for a source for round / curved gouges that have the cutting edge on the out side radius and not on the inside, where the bevle is facing the out side curve. I have not been able to find them in any tool catalog. I saw some being ued in on a DVD on building a Chambers Rifle Kit. :(

So the outside of the gouge is flat, and the inside is beveled? If I'm understanding you right, I've never seen such an animal either. I made one once, but it didn't cut worth beans - the bevel is on the outside for a reason, so far as I know. I think you can get scorps that are sharpened like that, but they are a lot different than a gouge.

I thought they were all on the outside radius! This is not a closeup but you can see there is no bevel in the groove. Go to www.woodcraft.com

I have had to make my own with the bevel on the inside of the groove.

Triple, the advantage of having a gouge with the bevel on the inside is I can cut radius inlets, "straight down". I made one that perfectly fits the radius on the front of most locks, and it makes that cut easy and smooth. Another does the cut for the front of the mainspring inlet, etc.

If I try to do the same with a chisel that is beveled on the outside, I have to tip it inward. And then the son of a gun cuts deeper on the "wings" than in the middle of the groove. If you can guess what the devil I am talking about. So for me such chisels are special purpose- to make radius inlet cuts that are flat-bottomed.

I believe what you're talkin about is 'in-cannel' vs 'out-cannel' gouges. Both typical to the patternmaker trade -each with specific uses.
