casting pewter sources

can anyone give me some idea of where to buy some pewter for pouring a few small projects, knife bolsters, tomahawk handles etc..... looking for some reasonably priced . if thats possible :hatsoff:

Hornbuilder, yard sales, resale shops,Goodwill, is where I've picked up some at real good prices.Usually find it as old plates, commerative plaques and the occasional suger n cream sets. I check the markings on the bottom before I chop em up n melt em to make sure I ain't ruining something that might be worth keeping. As long as yer not useing it on eating utensiles I don't think ya need to worry to much about lead content. Also lots of guys use lead free solder, comes out almost the same look n feel n is easy to find. Just some thoughts YMHS Birdman

Automotive wheel weights, make a good subistute.
They are hard, cast well, and most of all they are cheap.
That's the part I like.

Track of the Wolf carries it - be sure and get the un-leaded version. Much of the pewter cups, etc may also contain lead, cadmium, and other nasties.

Lead and the other heavy metals are cumulative a little bit may not a kill you now but over time it just t'aint good to breath too much.

Wheel weights have quite a bit of cadmium in them. I don't worry too much about the lead. I have a day job as a Safety and Environmental Professional and cadmium get all my respect.

I recently discovered cold blue can be bad for you health too. :nono:

Try Conquest Industries, Santa Fe Springs, California.[url] www.conquestind.com[/url] They have all types of alloys, including lead free pewter. Their "OR-8" is what i use for spoons and toy soldiers.

OK.... so this will sound really stupid.....
I thought wheel weights were lead.....

The idea of buying crumby pewter and re-melting it does sound good.... other than that, it would be Jas. Townsen... they sell pewter... everyplace else when I did a web search sold in too large of a quantity...
