I went and purchased the ingredients for "Moose Snot" patch lube today. I've already made the Moose Milk lube and something escaped my attention when I purchased the components for it: the cost of Castor Oil...even if I get the Walgreens brand it costs over $5 for 4ounces. Thus, a batch of "Moose Snot" will cost over 10 bucks in just the oil. Is there a cheaper alternative to castor oil? (What are the advantages to using castor oil versus another vegetable-based oil?); or do you know of a source that has lower prices for castor oil?

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I work at a drug store and get em for a couple bucks, maybe I should start selling them :rotf:

Yeeee. Don't go back there. I use Sig Castor that is intended to add to alcohol for model airplane fuel. Runs $4.50 for 16 oz. at my local hobby shop.

Castor is unique that it is a vegetable oil but shares properties with animal oil. The only other one I know of is jojoba oil, but if you think castor is bad you'll be floored by jojoba. I have seen other folks have found deals.

There are also places that will sell you a gallon of castor oil pretty cheap, but the shipping is a killer. Some fellow named "Casey" or near that has some interesting, if disturbing, ideas on where you should put castor oil.

You can also reduce the batch size.

If you start swapping out the oils you're on your own experiment for results. I did some long term and short but severe rust testing on steel outdoors - including leaving one of my rifles loaded for 11 months in my unheated NY garage after a wipe with Moose Juice and a Moose Snot patched ball. I know the combination works and won't hurt barrel metal. The beeswax and castor in my lubes is because they worked best. I don't know if you can still get to the old "Lube Wars" threads in the archives.

Do a search on Amazon. I found a place called "VitaminLife" that sells 16oz of pure castor oil for $4.40.

Local dent-and-bent had 1 4oz bottle for .50.Grabbed that in a hurry.

I made up a batch using mineral oil. It seems to work as well as caster oil.

I have an whole unopened gallon bottle of Sig Castor that I would be willing to part with if a list member wanted a gallon of it .....
