Has anyone used Castrol R oil in a muzzle loader?
The "R" stuff is based off of the same stuff you buy at the drug store. But the major difference is it has the anti wear additives in it. Race cars have used it for years in Hiperformance engines. Remember it's still a veggie oil and not out of the ground. I have one quart I bought 6yrs. ago, paid about $10 for it from private party. Don't know what it runs today but it ain't cheap. Wonder what kind of lube will come out after mixing with beeswax?

Never used that but on all my firearms I use marvels mystery oil. The stuff is great. Never turns sticky and gets in all the little places. Good to 40 below and can also be used as a fuel stabiliser. Ace hardware now sells 4 oz squeese bottles of it.

Nay a drop of petrolium based oil shall ever touch my rifle.

Castrol R has been around for almost 50 years.
I used to use it in my 53 flathead, swtiched to Castrol HD 30 after the last rebuild.

There are a bunch of oils out there that out preform it. Any of the Synthecs for sure.

That is right on the temp. I never used it until about 15 years ago there was an atricle in American Survival Guide on the stuff and all the uses. The article stated that is does not freeze up until below that. Now I have taken my rife out shooting and have done this while ice fishing(i an in New England) and never had any issues. However I still use a BP lube for inside the barell.

If I can dig up the article on Marvels in my library I will post it.

"Good advice."

Why? It preserves the bore, is easy to clean out when you want to shoot and is readily avaiable.
