I'm really considering attempting one of these in 12 gauge. Anybody built one? Use one? Comments, suggestions. Any general info to make me drool more?

Thanks in advance,

Hugh

I know Mike Brooks has. He built a beautiful gun that I've had the one being built for me now, patterned after. Mine isn't exactly "PC" but pretty darn close and it's all mine.

i built two mark silver guns from jim.. both with upgrade stocks.. one 16 guage shotgun and the other a .620 rifle to match.. very nice guns, with great barrels, and the colonial virginia is a fantastic lock.. the first one i had to take the trigger parts to a gunsmith and ask him how to put them together.. the first one was really hard for me.. i was a cabinet maker for 23 years and less than perfect was out of the question...silly becouse its been in and out of the marsh 100's of times now and is just my "ole huntin gun" but thats me.. the second one took a lot of time but was not anyway near as hard as i had the first one to go by.. be sure of what your doing before you cut into anything, use lots of candles, and take your time. 12 guage is on the shotgun side, and round balls will be huge.. that wont hurt the shootng/ hunting, but youl go thru the lead, and need a heavy ball bag... you may have the option of making the mark silver (gun above on same page) into a 16 guage if jims barrel maker will do it on special order.. it has an octagon swamped barrel.. if its birds your after the 12 gauge will be great.. id like to have one in 10 gauge for geese, but id need to find a very dence stock, as it looks like the foweler would be pretty light in a 10.... dave..

That's going to be a stunning gun when it's finished. You couldn't have picked a better builder to do the job either.

I've been lusting after that fowler after seeing the one Mike Brooks built, its a beauty and being from New England makes it even better. I hope to have one built, but when I called Barbie about the parts I was told they will not have anything in 12 ga until March. You might want to check with them.

Thanks, JM. I actually have an email into Barbie about that very thing, but never heard back from her. You're saying March, lets me know I had better call too.......So much for using it on gobblers this year......oh well...

A one month lead time is express service for a good swamped barrel. Maybe a 10 or 11 gauge is available for immediate shipment. Balls, wads, and cards are readily available for the 10 and 11 gauges. You can get .715 and .735 round balls at Cabela's. Mr Getz advocates boring these barrels to 10 gauge to make em lighter.

When I inquired several months ago I was told she had one 10ga barrel in stock and expected others in March (5 - 6 months out).
