I was at Wal-Mart today doing a little shopping when I decided to stroll down by the crafts department and see if they have any pillow ticking in the bargain bin, well I didn't find any (all they have was the $3.77 stuff) but I did find this butt ugly checkerboard pattern stuff in their, I'm not sure what it was called but if you close your eyes you would swear it was ticking @$1 square yard. Well I didn't pick any up but all supercenters Purdy much have the same thing so if you're in their you might wanna check it out.

I got a bunch of red & black checked "buffalo plaid" flannel that worked fine as patches for shooting a .535 ball in my .54 Renegade. As I remember it miked out at 0.012" instead of my regular 0.017 to 0.018" cotton tick.

Next time I go to Wal-Mart I'll bring my dial caliper and check it, if it's between .015 and .018 I'll buy the whole bolt.

I dont shoot PRB,but I do use a bunch of cleaning patches.I cut em all out of flannel bed sheets that my wife picks up for under a buck a set at garrage sales.I make em 2"sq.for 50-69 cal.1 1/4 for .44.Most mike out at .015-.018.2 sets of queen sized will keep me going for a year.I use a paper cutter to slice them. Some use a roller cutter that quilters use.

Ah yes. A happy day indeed is the retiring of the flannel bedsheets at our house. Next time I'm helping pick out the new pattern. The current sheets I call our "Bobo the Clown sheets". Little red and yellow roses with green leaves on a pink background. Hugh Glass never suffered such indignities as I will be facing.

Couldn't you dye it one solid color (like crimson or navy) before you cut it up and use it?

It would certainly be worth a try. With my luck I'll use blue dye and it will turn out lavender and lilac. I get enough grief from the local rednecks for walking into the woods with a 'purse' around my shoulder. (There is one area I hunt where I use a belt bag, a .45 Auto in a shoulder rig, and keep an eye out for an albino kid with a banjo - talk about stepping back in time. This 'group' is a couple chromosomes short of our species and I'm pretty sure they're using the state lands as their year-round hunting preserve).

At least with the pink and yellow you can tell when the patch is coming out clean.

I recently ran across several bolts of pillos ticking at Walmart that was .0145 & .015" a month or so ago. Really shocked me as I have been checking with them regularly for over a year & all I could find was the real thin .011 there. So I bought 12 yd. bolt of the red striped & one of the plain ticking there. Found a 30 yd. bolt of the .018 ticking at Hancock Fabrics. This should last me all my shooting years.

I GUESS SO! I could get 20,160 shots for my .54 on 30 yards of tick (figuring 1.5" x 1.5" per patch cut as needed from strips). I got six yards last time I bought and figured that would see me aways into the future.
