What?!! No pictures?
I just turned the 36" .54 cal. Green Mountain barrel down to 29.8" so I have 29.25" of useable bore, and the overall length including breech assembly is now 31".
Normally it is advisable to lop of the threaded breech end, as this is typically the "run-out" end of the barrel.
But, the breechplug assembly and the barrel were threaded 5/8 x 18 TPI, and when dealing with a .54 cal. bore, there is virtually no shoulder to set the breechplug against. Basically all that dictates a shoulder are the lands.
The threaded end was perfectly centered, so I decided to take my chances, and cut the muzzle end. Breechplug position for safety is more important than a perfectly centered muzzle.
So I did the old "cut it 1 inch too long trick". If the muzzle is way out of wack, I can then thread it, and because the breech end was centered, I could crown it after eliminating the threads.
Well, it was my lucky day, the muzzle was centered perfectly, even after lopping 5.2" of barrel. Whew!
I got the underib from TOWT and was not too thrilled. So I am going to have to machine one out of brass. (I have seen it on pistols)
The next installment of Cherry Build will be pictures of the brass underib with brass thimbles.
