Well...The year I was born my father built a .45 Kentucky Percussion Rifle for me. Because of time issues growing up and location problem caused by moving around a lot I've never had a chance to do more than shoot targets with it few times. Until now that is. After taking it to the range for the first time in 10 years I decided that I was gonna hunt with it finally. Took it out yesterday with a friend of mine. He did a little rattling and sure enough in walks a nice 4X4 whitetail. With my heart thumping I set the irons on him at about 60yds and let'er roar. He ran about 30yds down the hill and dropped flat. As to the effectivness of prb. The shot entered high just behind the shoulder and took the top half of both lungs completely off, and lodged just under the hide on the offside. I have never grined so wide for any other deer i've killed...First BP hunt and never goin back to centerfire

BP:

Congratulations on the buck. Makes it very special using a gun your dad built also.

First of all Congrats :hatsoff:

I've got a .45 that I've kicked around hunting with (if I can ever get drawn down here). I'm curious as to what your load and set up was (ball size, patching, grains of powder etc.)?

Grace shoots best with a .440 round ball with a .015 lubed patch in front of 75 grains of fffG pyrodex though i would love a chance to shoot some of the real macoy, just can't find any.

Great hunt! Congrats. You'll remember that for the rest of your life!

I still haven't managed to name my smoke poles. I'm terrible at thinking up names, just ask my dogs! :rotf:

My brother's new .45 rifle with the 37 inch barrel shoots 65 grains of FFFg, and gets 1900 fps. out the muzzle. Its shooting dead flat past 100 yds, with that load. .015 patch and .440 ball. He's right at about maximum powder to burn in that length barrel for a .45. ( 11.5 grains of powder per cubic inch of barrel. ( .450 divided by 2=.225./ .225 x .225 = .050625./ .050625 x 3.1416 = .159./ .159 x 11.5 = 1.83./ 1.83 x 37 = 67.7 grains. )) He is going to back that charge down to 60 grains and see if it doesn't group better.
