I just got a package of 500 from TOW. What is the general opinion about these fiber wads? I got the dry ones. Should I soak them in olive oil or roll them in my olive oil/bees wax mix? And what kind of container do you use to carry the lubed wads into the field?

Circle Fly is all i use. I split the fiber wads in half after soaking them in Crisco. The lube helps keep the fouling soft in the barrel so i can shoot a lot with no swabbing. I carry them in a small leather bag that has a round bottom so it stays open and is made out of a pretty stiff leather. Keep it in the bottom of my shooting bag along with another one for overpowder wads and one for overshot cards.

I do about as Rebel does. I do soak mine in virgin olive oil and then let them drain. I carry mine in a zip lock baggy. Not really PC but it works well.

These are all I use in my 16ga. trade gun. I dfiffer some-what from most here as I use them dry. I first cut the hard surface from one wad and load the remainder over the powder then another wad over this (hard side out towards the shot column), then I use the hard surface I cut off as an over shot card. This is the bulk of my load (no shot cups or anything else). I can shoot all day with no fouling.

Same here only I groove mine to make a channel for the lube...

I believe the groove collapses apon firing and squeezes the lube out through piston action...

I use them as well. I soak in Crisco and store them in a plactic bag. When I go out I put several in the pocket of my fowling bag. I use separate over powder and overshot cards though.

I load powder than over pwder card followed by the crisco soaked wad, then shot and then overshot card.

I made a small 3' sq pouch worked the insides with wonder lube or whatever you prefer, lubed wads come right out.

Not sure if you're useing them for shot or ball.
But, if for shot, I've found that leaving them dry is working best (by far) for me. I am however using 2 nitro cards over the powder with a "finger's scoop of goop (oil & B wax)" between the 2 cards.
Shot paterns are quite noticably tighter this way (for me) as compared to the soaked wad method. I've not tried MM's groove and stuff method but seems like more "fiddlin' than needed.
If you're talking wads for the ball, I've no comment 'cause I'm sticking with the patch only method.
Just anouther $0.02 to try out.

riarcher,

I thrid that method a while back with lube between an over powder card and an over shot card. Then the shot. It lubed the bbl nice. About 25 shots with no more difficulty loading the last shot vs the first.

The best lube that I have used is 50/50 Veggie and Mineral Spirits. Cut the wad, nearly in half, then let them soak, give them a couple of pinches, then bag em.

I grease mine the day I go shoot with bore butter or wonder lube 1000 and keep them in a baggie in my shotgun pouch so they don't get mixed in with the over power cards and over shot cards. I never use a liquid on them as they soak up that liquid then fall apart into a heap of vegetable fibers and pulp when trying to load them in the barrel. Any kind of lube will do nicely that is the consistency of crisco or wonder lube. Thick yet easily spreadable on the outside of the fiber wad.

tinder box tin, large round covered brass box from track of the wolf, i think is for tobbaco, shoe polish tin, large pill bottle, old home movie can all work for storing fiber wads without getting them to come apart when in a pouch, or shooting box.. ..dave

I roll the cusion wads in melted crisco. Let it dry/cool on a paper towel.
Split em in half and keep them in a tin container with the powder and shot cards.
I think an antiqued Altoids tin will hold 21-22 sets (set = op wad. 1/2 cusion, os wad).
I also put 2-3 .610 balls in the tin cuz my roundball load and shot load are the same.
Instead of shot I drop the unpatched ball down the bore and hold it in place with a shot card.

I have learned with the smooth bore it is important to keep it simple & dependable.
