I know this is a bit late (just got hold of a copy myself), but the April issue of National Geographic has a good article about Civil War battlefields and the current efforts to save them from encroaching development. Has some amazing 'then & now' photos.

Also includes a large fold-out. One side has a map of the southeastern U.S. with every battle site shown (including naval battles), timeline, effects of major battles, etc. The other side has various pictures, with a close-up of a Spencer carbine, a Hanes grenade, various paper and metallic cartridges, etc.

Hi Rex,

Does the version in your area have the reenactor period-type image on the cover? My newstand one does ... anyone know who this is? I believe it might be Rob Hodge, who started out in my old unit (4th Ky Inf CSA).

Regards,
Greg

Nope. Mine has a picture of the face of an 18,000-year-old sub-human person, from the article about the race of primitive mini-people they found in Indonesia. Funny how they use diffferent covers to appeal to readers in different regions. Civil War reenactors for you guys in the South, and for us in the West... primitive pygmie humans on an island in the South Pacific... ::
