I've just picked up a 69 cal smooth bore for living history and reenacting. The barrel is full of rust has has some pitting near the breech. I would like to be able to clean with a jag without it getting stuck. Any hints or products that work for this?

Chuck a cleaning rod tipped with a phosphorbronze brush into a 3/8 drill . Keep it well lubed with cleaning solvent while you work it in and out while spinning with the drill. This will loosen up the majority of the rust. Before you try running a patch down flush out the barrel through the nipple/touch hole.

The Professor, is right,,, but may I suggest you seal up one end and let it soak flooded with something like Kroil or Liquid Wrench first?
Be patient,, let it soak for a full week to break down the rust. You'll be happy you did.

Fine grit steel wool wraped around the brush 000 or better will polish it right up. use oil.
Its an old gunsmithing trick I read in an old book,
Used for cleaning the plastic out of shotgun barrels.
I used in on an old rifle barrel and it just worked slick

Make sure the gun is empty first, there are a lot of loaded guns (old and new alike) being sold out there...
