Okay, newbie has now become cheapy! I am an old smokeless, centerfire follower, who has a pretty good cleaning kit. I had a rude awakening today when I discovered everything BP has 10 x 32 threads, while the smokeless stuff has 8 x 32 threads. Nothing fits my cleaning kit. No wonder you can spend a lot on "things" in this hobby when they obsolete anything that might cross over. Does anybody know if there are adapters that would have 10 x 32 female on one end and 8 x 32 male end on the other (or even a bright idea on making one, other than having a machine shop make one for the cost of a new cleaning kit)?

:hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :cursing:

Many of mine are 8X32. For years I thought 8X32 was standard, and only T/C used the wrong 10X32 thread size. Track of the Wolf sells both thread sizes, and adapters too I believe.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mr. Lewis!!! I have all these BP websites on the computer, but am never sure where to look for something. That is what is so good about this forum. I looked at Track of the Wolf and found what I am looking for.

The reason everything has migrated to the larger 10/32" size is because it's bigger & stronger...8/32" is old school...everything is now manufactured in the larger stronger size...has been for years now...the first time you snap off a skinny little 8/32" adapter thread, you'll kick yourself for not using the stronger 10/32" system.

8-32 is industry standard for everything but shotguns, including 50 caliber Browning Machine Gun rods. The ONLY place you find 10-32 is at dedicated ML suppliers and they generally carry 8-32 as well, I order 8-32 stuff from TOW all the time (think they have jags to 12 guage in 8-32. Since I started this before the 10-32 came out (SFAIK) I was always used 8-32 and buying a 10-32 rod tip is a waste of time since everything I have is 8 or shotgun (try finding a 10x32 to shotgun adapter at Wal-Mart).
Try pulling a 8-32 threaded steel screw in two with your bare hands... I doubt you can pull a brass one in two without mechanical advantage. If you break it off its operator error. I have never broken a steel threaded jag, brass will break off regardless if subjected to a side load and not screwed down with the jag tight on the rod end.

But this is a your mileage may vary thing. If you only use the stuff on MLs 10-32 is probably OK.

I use my dedicated cleaning rods for things besides MLs and consider 10-32 to be a unnecessary PITA.

You and I have similar thinking. I need jags for a 50 caliber, wire brushes, etc. and I only spent an hour or two in Cabelas and Sportsman's Warehouse looking at BP stuff. Everything they had was 10 x 32. With a little more looking online I think I can find 8 x 32 stuff and not make my cleaning kit obsolete. I agree that if you tighten everything up when you put it together and use it, you shouldn't break it.

Thanks for your input.

All my muzzleloading equipment is bought and used on muzzleloaders.
I buy only 10/32" adapters because they're bigger and stronger...it's not a mileage thing, it's a fact.

If you chose to use the smaller 8/32" size ML components because you also want to use something on an 8/32" threaded centerfire rifle rod or something, then that's your mileage thing.

PS: Your example of "trying to pull apart an 8/32 adapter with bare hands" is bogus and you know it.

I prefer the 8X32 myself. I have a lot of both, so I use an adapter for the 10X32 T/C cleaning accessories.

A ramrod with an 8x32 tip on one end, and a 10X32 tip on the other is a wonderful thing.
