Being a re-enactor I sometimes use my guns in battles and demos. One thing I hate doing is pulling out a modern tackle box with my cleaning supplies to clean my gun. I would like to either build or buy something more appropriate. Anybody have any plans for a nice wooden box that would be better ?

John,

Do you have access to milled lumber, or are you going to have to use lumber from a big box hardware store?

Can you hand saw/make dovetails? You don't have to do it and make it historically accurate, though. Period nails will work fine to hold such a box together.

A pull up tray is not difficult to make and it can be held in the box by inletting or nailing in a couple of shoulders.

I would suggest Snipe Hinges, as they are period correct from the 17th through early 19th century. They are cheap or fairly easy to make and more than sturdy enough for this use.

Any good hc piece has its place in camp, even if it's not something everyone would carry. That said I have to wonder what sort of supplies for cleaning that would take a box to camp. My 'kit' shone or afield fits in a small tin, with a tin cup to hold water.

I agree most of them never carried cleaning supplies in a box, but period correct camp boxes are a neat addition to camp gear for many people.

JohnN,

May I suggest you go to the link below where I gave all kinds of information on period boxes over the next several pages? I would also suggest scrolling down to my post Post#1457417 and reading from there onwards. I linked original and repro boxes.

If a guy were attending a week end rendezvous, and expecting to do a lot of shooting, I could see where a box might come in handy to keep extra supplies at the ready such as:
  • an extra pound or two of powder
  • more balls than you wish to carry in your bag
  • a few extra leather pads for his flintlock
  • a large bag of tow for cleaning
  • more patching material
  • an extra tin or tube of patch lube
  • a spare gun worm in case you lose the good one
  • extra vent picks (I'm always losing these)

I've been doing a little more thinking about this subject. Here's another idea I came up with: How about a market wallet?

A market wallet is a simple, long split pouch made of some coarse fabric used to stash anything you want in it.

Everything needed to clean my gun (except the water) is in my shooting bag....

I can clean my gun with a worm and tow when need be, but sometimes I like to use a 4 piece rod, brush, jag, WD40, patches, abrasive, extra tools,etc.... you know, all the modern conveniences.
