Cloth/ cotton bag treatment???

I recently bought a large red cotton possibles bag from a show, the guy told me I should wax it with Hubbards shoe grease or something similar to waterproof it and keep it from getting really grungy.
Anyone have any do's or don't recommendations?

Sell or trade the cotton bag and make one of linen. No need to treat with anything.

There was a post here a few week back about bees wax treated bags . I think Spence was in on it . I know he has a nice bag he has used for a while now. Maybe try to use the search feature or hopefully someone can help you out .. :thumbsup:

I melt a golf ball size chunk of beeswax and add a table spoon of linseed oil to the melted wax and stir it in. Then paint it on the cloth bag. It will harden before you can get it all worked in and look real messy and wax covered. I then use a Wagner's heat gun, (you could put it between two pieces of foil and use the oven as described above) and finish melting the wax into the cloth. Take a scraper and scrape off any excess wax you don't want. Pay close attention to seams for full penetration.

Now the cloth will be darker and to my mind grungier which it sounded like you wanted to avoid so "tin-clothing" might not be what you really want. I like the look. makes it look like I've been on a trek for 9 months with the bag but you might be a city feller and want it to look purty.

A dye made from unripe persimmons fermented for two years is useful for waterproofing. It is an old Japanese method. The color will also change over time.
