So, this won't apply in all parts of the state but here is where I'm finding them in Unit 20 and other Continental divide areas.
At this time, the cows seem to be widely disbursed in small herds. The bulls are at higher elevations mostly above timberline but there are exceptions. I observed one large bull down low (9,000 ft) who was very interested in a small group of cows, but the cows were not the least bit interested in him.
Observed one herd of 17 elk above timberline that was about an even mix of bulls and cows with the bulls not paying much attention to the cows and no bull trying to lay any claims.
Observed a bachelor group of seven bulls above timberline with one spike in velvet, one four point, one six point and the rest five points. None were massive but they were nice animals. They were all quite content in each others company. There was occasional half hearted sparring but they would quickly return to feeding peaceably.
So, all in all, the rutt is not fired up as of 9/7. A lot can happen between now and the 12th!!
