Well the muzzleloader hunt is just a week away and wanted to know from all the co. boys on this site what the weather was like out there this summer are we going to have any water holes (with water in them) to sit by our do we have to get down in the black timber to beat the heat. We are hunting south of glenwoodsprings.

Just got back last Wedsday from a trip to the Gunnison area. There was a whole lot of snow this past winter and there is still a lot of green in the valleys as well as up high. The SE part of the state had some summer drought but south of Glenwood should be wet.

We did have a heat wave the last few weeks of August but now its cooled down and there has been a bit of rain in the mtns. Glenwood itself has been running mid 70's by day. Will be cooler up higher but anything can happen.

If we get a hurricane pushing from the gulf of california and a cold front out of the North or North west you will be hunting in snow.

Was up for one day with the bow last week hunting at about 10,000 feet. Cool in the trees but there was not much sign of elk rut activity yet. I did call a small bull in to about 50 yards but he would not come any closer. Came in silent, never heard a single elk sound all day.

There had been a lot of mushrooms but they seem to have dried up as of last Sat but then came more rain so the mushrooms are probably going strong again. They will often quit their grazing areas and hunt mushrooms when they are growing profusely.

DOW people say things are running a couple weeks behind this year due to late spring. Saw a cvovey of grouse that were only a bit over half grown last Sat. :shocked2: Also saw broods of ducks on the Gunnison river that were only half grown.

Can't make any promises, but am betting you have a good hunt. :)

Am leaving the 14th to hunt ML bear and might be able to squeeze in some elk time with the bow too.

Looking forward to hearing your stories later.

BTW, if you are a week away from hunting, you won't have much time to hunt. Season winds up next Sunday the 18th.

Thanks for the info! I'm off to hunt first rifle (with my percussion .58) in a few weeks. Will be up around Meeker.
