I have a Southern Mountain Rilfe equipped with a Cochrane lock. The company is now out of business. At one time Track of the Wolf carried Cochrane locks but their parts are long gone. I do not need anything for the lock at the moment but would like to buy a spare mainspring. Does anyone know where I might find Cochrane parts or is there a suitable substitute for the Cochran mainspring? Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

You will probably need to find a gunsmith that can hand forge a flat leaf main spring to fit. He would need the whole lock to make sure everything fits and works.

As far as my experience goes, in 30 years of shooting the only mainsprings that I have had to replace were cheap Jap Tower pistol springs. If you use a spring vise to remove the main spring and don't over tighten it, your main spring should function over the long term and not need replacement.

Thanks for the reply. A friend of mine, who builds his own guns, actually had a Siler mainspring go south on him at a big match. And, although there were a lot of dealers present with mainsprings, he is left-handed so they did not have those. Hopefully I will never need one but thought I would try to find out if parts were still available. I got a guy's name some time back and e-mailed him but never got a reply.
