just wondering what you guys wear while hunting in the cold. I have been eyeballing pictures of capotes, (wool). any one wear something like this? I would think a knee length capote would be nice. not trying to be period correct, thinking more on the practical lines. It can be anywhere from 15 degrees below 0 to a warm 40 degreees above. flinch

You might check out the thread, "Cold Weather Garb", that I started in the Historically Accurate Equipment forum. I needed the same advice you're asking for, and received heaps of it.

With that spread in temperature...layering seems to be in order, unless you are operating out of a cabin or your house. Personally, for cold weather..and I've hunted in -20 below for deer... and been out from dawn till dark. I found that a pair of long johns under either jeans or khakis pants with woolen pants over those along with a flannel shirt, woolen shirt over that and a decent hunting coat over that...and decent footwear..I prefer Sorel boots. If the temp is 40 or so, then of course you don't need all that. I personally would not want to be out in below zero temps with a capote alone. Also, for hunting..I would not want to use a capote...too long, too restrictive for me. Might be fine if one was on a horse and got off to take the shot...but otherwise..not me.

I wear my blanket wool pullover Longhunter shirt and blaze orange wool hood with cape in cold weather. Long johns, wool pants, and a sweater or flannel shirt under, topped off with a fur or wool cap. That works for me here in the Michigan winters.
