I have a poplar board over 2' wide that my grandfather sawed back in the mid to late 30's. I am going to use it to hang a couple of my rifles on. I would like to make the ends look like a colonial sign. Any ideas on what shape to use ?

Oh My Heavens!!! Save the board to use as a top board for a reproduction period box or chest!!

OK, if you REALLY HAVE to use the board that way, may I suggest you consider forms using Cyma curves as that was a very popular decoration style in the 18th century?

You can find examples by googling: 18th Century Signs, 18th Century Trade Signs, 18th century Tavern Signs, and believe it or not 18th century wall mirrors.

Thanks Gus, someone else told me to use the board for a table top. I just want to save it, going to write the history of it on the back when its finished.
Wish I could post a picture.

Gus... If you any kind of Christian get in your car and stop Patiodadio from using that board for a sign.

Patio;

If I read you right and you are going to mount rifles on it, try simple pine with milk paint.

You want to highlight the product, not the board.

The milk paint will give a great background.

Ah, yes...many a maiden bought a pair of my shoes because of a milk painted sign....OK, OK, so the red ribbons visible from a hunnerd yards or so may have helped...

:rotf: Well I do have some friends in the western part of Kentucky I could visit.....

VERY much agree it would be way better to make a pine sign or background and then paint it with a milk paint color that "goes with" the color décor of the room. OMG, did I REALLY say that??!!

Finger sandwiches anyone??

Yeah, you said that Gus, but don't worry Few dare call us Jarheads sissies...

Anyway, the best analogy is still the one where you are trying to sell the house. Realtors want you to "stage"it by removing as much eye candy or detractions as possible. A milk paint board acting like a rack will sell or display your guns, not the board.

If you end up going to Dixons this July, let us all know...

Smallpatch on this board made a neat rifle rack ,if I had the picture I would send it but lost it on the last pc crash.Dont remember if it was colonial or not .Smallpatch are you out there.Curt

I don't have any friends in Kentucky, but I'd like to stop by John Curry's house and shake his hand, and I'd like to see Kentucky, so I'm not that far from Gus, so I'm up for an intervention.

ROAD TRIP
