I'm looking to finish a small day horn soon. I have potas. permanganate, but I was thinking of a different color for the horn. maybe a brown. I'm interested to know if any listmembers have ever tried hair coloring on a horn? After all, a horn is made out of hair, and I wonder if it would have the same effect. Would it run if it got wet?

ohio rusty :
hair coloring will work fine , i've used it in paste form, not a liquid . you can also mix the colors to reach the desired shade you want. if your doing the throat and body different colors a little petrolium jelly will stop the coloring where you want to make the change.

I've tried the liquid hair dye [azure black] on a coupla different horns and even with repeated applications, never really got the deep, rich result wanted.
Still experimentin......Longshot

After all, a horn is made out of hair,...

From a previous post.

"Another difference between horns and antlers is that horns, like hooves, are composed of keratin, whereas antlers are composed of bone.

The composition of hard antler is similar to bone. It contains approx. 25% calcium and 19% phosphorous by weight. Organic matter makes up 39% of the antler by weight and water content is 8%."

Ohio Rusty: I've never tried hair color on a horn but I have used it on fur, specifically calf. I wanted a certain color for a shotbag and use the most permanent color I could find. It looked nice for awhile but the color bleached out after a year and half. This bag was not exposed to direct sunlight. I would be wary.
