Are their major differences in the various models of the Colt Dragoons? Other than cosmetic.

As far as I know,

The Whitneyville Dragoon has a Colt Walker grip and frame.

The first model Dragoon has oval bolt notches on the cylinder like the Walker.

The second model Dragoon has rectangular and beveled Bolt notches on the cylinder.

The third Model Dragoon has the same rectangular bolt notches and a rounded triggerguard. Some 3rd model Dragoons had leaf sights.

Hope this helps.

The latch on the loading lever also underwent some revisions.
The First models loading lever had a vertical release that wasn't always easy to push back.
The Second model was the transitional version from the vertical to the horizontal lever release that one could get a hold of on both sides of the lever which made releasing the lever much easier.
The Third model used the horizontal release.

The first model dragoon is said to have a U shaped mainspring like the walker instead of a leaf spring.

Also, the Whitneyville, first Dragoon and early serial seconds (originals) did not have the roller on the hammer. This mod came into play with the single leaf spring.
