As with anything else, there are many ways to skin a cat. When reading over the many posts on the Forum, I see things done by other shooters that are their personal way of doing things. Some of them I would not do on a bet. I realize some of you get chills and fever at the mere mention of a short starter. Others become dizzy at the sight of a priming horn. For me, the thing that gets my tighty whiteys in a twist is SWABBING THE BORE AFTER EVERY SHOT. If a law was ever passed that made this necessary, I would give up shooting black powder. The lube I use, Cat Whiz, makes it unnecessary to swab, my being able to shoot as many as 40 shots before cleaning, and I doubt the increase in accuracy would be noticeable when weighed against my ability. Since shooting paper targets is a close second on my hate list, the woods walk targets I normally shoot don't really need a group that is 1/16" tighter. What is it that you would not do, that may be a common thing for other people? Related to ML shooting, that is. :haha:

-Swabbing after every shot
-Weighing each ball
-Weighing each powder charge
-Weighing each load of shot
-Attaching numerous things to my bag/horn strap

Common ML things that drive you nuts...

The marred screwdriver slot on the jaw screw of a flintlock, I see this and it just drives me crazy... :cursing: :rotf:

I recomend using the hole that is drilled through the side of the bolt's head (if it has one) to spare the finished look of any flintlock...

Another thing that drived me crazy is the recessed area of wood behind the hammer... (it looks very ugly to me)

Manufactured production guns for are the most part, one size fits all, (flint/nipple lock/stock interchangeability) keeps the price down, and, one gets what they pay for.

The constant negative critiquing and nitpicking as to what fellow muzzleloaders do, or don't do.

 Cat whiz? I dont even want to think about that. I have in a pinch used people whiz but only as a last resort.

:rotf: I knew that was coming.

Musketman, while on the per-cussed guns, the "recessed area" is generally not necessary, it is almost always a necessity on Flintlock guns. This recess gives clearance for the shoulder on the cock to strike the top of the lockplate.

My peeves? Oh, there are SOOOO MANY!!! I'll pick just one...measuring patches.

Use 2f powder in any gun except maybe a cannon. Use a patchknife, use a priming horn or 4f for priming.

Keeping in mind that none of this is meant to be personal and that it doesn't "drive me nuts", because I don't really care what others do, here's what you won't find me doing...

Neck Knife
Patch Knife
Knife attached to bag strap
Priming Horn
Short Starter
4F for priming
Pan Brush

As long as "they" are safe, nothing. I never saw the sense in concerning myself with what or why others do things the way they do. I also figure it isn't any of their business or concern why I do things the way I do, as long as I'm safe. So when you see me using a short stater, priming horn with 4F, a patch knife and blowing down the barrel after each shot.....don't worry about it.
