How does one produce concentric circles on muzzle face of a barrel? I have seen this on a late percussion rifle I own personally , as well as on the Edward marshall rifle which predates its percussion cousin by at least a century. How is this effect produced? http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/269/2/BOOK-RCA-V1 go to tab three for example
My best guess would be to insert something in the muzzle that would act as an axis point and use something like a compas with a hardneed cutter to dig it into the face, but this is only a theory.

Has anyone got any insights into this?

With this. I made two of theses to do the accent lines, etc. One is for a small bore up to .50 cal, and the other is for .50 & larger. Cutter bit is ground off a broken HSS drill bit or Carbide drill bit.(Carbide lasts longer& cuts better)

You just add or remove the electrical tape til it just fits the bore & this keeps the tool parallel to the bore.

You spin it by hand with a Tap Handle & the lil tool cuts the groove or in some cases you can get 2 grooves, depends on the bore & muzzle dia. You adjust the depth by how far the bit sticks down.

That is how some of them were done, anyhow. There is an illustration of a surviving tool for this work shown on page 57 of John Rice Irwin's Guns and Gunmaking Tools of Southern Appalachia.

You will need to patch tightly or tape the jag. You want the end of the tool to be stable in the bore. If it is loose it will let the tool wander & not give a precise a cut as if it is stablized well.
Put some oil on the tape & tape installed so as you turn it the rifling keeps pushing down on the end of the take as you turn the tool.

That is what I meant when I said push the end of the tape down.... sell, except I misspelled Tape !

Of course, this has even fancier "stuff" like a muzzle chamfer and a nice drill bit hole at the tip of each octagon end. But it nice stuff to look at for sure!!

Yep. Been guilty of doing them such as that.

Keith....I'll just bet that when a deer get's hit by a PRB from a purdy barrel like that....the deer would say..."Hey....nice looking barrel you have there...I'll taste better just because you shot me with that!"

I'll bet that happens. Yup...Uh huh...yes sir. For sure.
