When I first picked up my Ruger old army all I ever fired through it were .457 round ball. I've loaded up to 42 gr. of Pyrodex P. and down to 18 gr. (any lower I would have to use filler) for accuracy over sandbag I found if I kept my loads under 30 gr. accuracy was too bad, shooting groups under 2 1/2 inches at 25 yards but when I increased the load accuracy what the hell, with 42 gr. loads shooting a 8 in. group.

Two years ago I picked up the Lyman 220 gr. HP mold for the old army, with the plan to use these bullet for hunting.

I casted all the conical from pure lead and ran them through a .454 sizing die. I found that I could load them down to 15 gr. of Pyrodex P. or up to 38 gr. of Pyrodex P. ( 38 gr. is that absolute max for bullet cylinder Clarence ).

Accuracy with these conical is very excellent, the 15 gr. load producers groups around 1 inch at 25 yards and under 3 in. group's with 38 gr.

As for velocity the 15 gr. load was around 480 fps and with 38 gr. it was between 950 fps and 980 fps over the chronograph.

Out of the mould the conical weighed 211 gr. but it was interesting that with 38 gr. of Pyrodex P. the velocity of .457 round ball and the conical were the same.

I have and new can of FFFg triple 7 that has not been opened but when I break seal, I'll let everybody know how it shoots in my old army. I don't think I'll use 38 gr. of this stuff it just might be a little too hot.

Allen Taylor made the conical mold by running a .452" diameter reamer into a .457" Lee round ball mold. This made a neat little conical bullet that has proven pretty accurate in the .45 Colt and shot fairly well in Ruger Old Army. It can also be loaded backwards for a nice full wadcutter in the Old Army.

Bullet Powder Charge Velocity
178 gr. conical * (homemade bullet mold)
FFg DuPont 40 gr. 960 fps
FFFg DuPont 40 gr. 1011 fps
Pyrodex P cylinder full 1120 fps
