coning touch hole on the outside

I am thinking of slightly coning the outside of the touch hole on my Pedersoli Queen Anne pistol to get better ignition . Will this really help any , or will I be wasting my time ?

Yes it will some, does your liner have a screwdriver slot in it for removal? If so you could cone it from the back side to bring powder closer.Or buy a stainlees steel allen screw and drill it and cone from the back side fit and file flush to barrel these work well but I think the PC police would frown on it

:thanks: Mr. Hunter , I don't have a vent liner , and the touch hole is drilled all the way back at the breach plug , as a matter of fact part of the hole is drilled into the breach plug , so I think a vent liner is out of the question . It seems coning from the outside is my only option . The hole is 5/64" and the barrel is about 3/8" thick where it's drilled .

You don't say what caliber it is, but if it is a large caliber like a .54 , the touchhole diameter is crucial to fast ignition, along with coning it on the inside & sometimes a lil cone on the outside. It is important to leave about a .025 straight wall thickness in the vent to insure it don't burn out prematurely.
On a removable vent liner & a 50 cal. & larger bore I like a 5/64" vent hole. You can cone it easily with a #2 center drill & if you don't like it you are just out a vent liner.

:thanks: Birddog , You must have been typing about the same time I was . I only shoot it for fun , but it would be alot more fun if the ignition was more reliable . I suppose I'll just have to do what I can , and accept it for what it is . When I have the money I want to get a Chambers Kentucky pistol kit .

Oop's didnt know that it didnt have aliner :sorry: Birddog has some good advice

Looking at mine I gotta say, damn! No wonder it is slow to fire!
Mine has a .062 touch hole going not only thru the thick wall, but it doesn't break out into the bore until it's about 1/8 inch from the centerline of the bore.

How's this possible in a .50 caliber gun, you say?
The touch hole is below the breech plugs face (I use the term loosely. It doesn't have a breech plug.
Well, the bottom of the bore seems to have a large drill point going down into it. The touch hole breaks thru into this drill point and this doesn't occure until it is 1/8 of an inch inside the wall of the bore.

What all of this means is this is a prime candidate for a vent insert, but it would be best to make a home made one.

The smallest standard vent I know of is a 1/4-28 thread. This might fit, but under the centerline of the vent, they have milled away the barrel material to make room for the lock spring. This (on my gun) leaves a .141 wall of material. As the 1/4-28 vent is .125 radius, that only leaves .016 worth of material supporting the bottom of the vent liner.
If one used a #10-32 screw with a .078 hole thru its center, it could be installed and it would leave a .046 wall in this area.
Yes, it will be an interupted cut after the drill breaks into the bore and breechs coned face, but it's do-able.

I don't know about your gun, but in order to remove the lock from mine, I had to put it on half cock. This is because the mainspring tumbler link hangs down below the outside of the lock when the cock is all of the way down.
Fortunatly, Pedersoli made a little pocket in the wood for it but it does prevent removing the lock when the cock is down.

So, to answer your question about grinding a pocket in the outside of the barrel to shorten the flash hole? I will say it won't do much if anything at all. ::

As for me, I think I'll reassemble mine and put it back up above the fireplace for right now. Another future project for my retirement.

Hey Zonie you would think they (Pedersoli) had seen this and made a change so it wouldnt be a issue

When it comes to several Pedersoli products, "Caveat emptor."

Zonie , first let me say , seeing the pic of your QA on the forum last September , was what spured me into getting one for myself  . It is definetly one cool looking pistol ! Too bad it looks better than it works :( . I got my QA kit from DGW back in October and my barrel looks identical to yours except it doesn't have the little step down at the muzzle . My barrel definetly has a breach plug with a flat face , so I would guess they must have changed the way they were making the barrels . Judging from the posts I've read on this forum about Pedersoli firearms , it seems like you can either get a good one or a bad one , depending on your luck :results: . I appreciate your help , but I don't have a drill press , and the fix you suggested would be a challenge to my skill (or lack of it). Since the pistol does fire (just not every time), I think I'll leave it alone and set my sights on the Chambers pistol . I'll be done paying child support , the end of October , and with my Christmas bonus and tax refund , I should be able to afford the Chambers kit and a small drill press . :thanks: :hatsoff:
