They were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.

I would love to give it a try, all the same.
 
Why???
A good question...an example

My flintlock has been having some issues, for the last few years. The frizzen needs to be repaired and due to the screws location I can't remove easily.
I needed a gun to fire, I had another caplock with a broken sear, so a swap of the hammers and a little jig to make. Had a couple of nipples and caps.
I used exactly the example above, but created in Aluminum as an prototype.
It worked exactly above, honestly it worked out pretty good. It just doesn't look good,
I didn't need a "vent hole", it worked fine without.
