In my ongoing effort for authenticity I just came up short when I came across my "Cow's Knee" last night. Time for an upgrade. If any of you aren't familiar with one - you should be. It's a cover placed over the lock of a gun in inclement weather that is easy to remove - keeps rain and tree drippings off the lock.

They were leather or oil cloth, well greased or oiled to shed water and snow. In my case, I've used Saran Wrap (no lie, I forgot to bring one and opened my PB&J sandwich early - worked fine) and have a leather one; but it is a ghastly grey piece of heavily waxed chrome tanned leather I had from a bag of leather scraps. One of those things I've ment to replace - for about two decades.

Anyone have a lead on a good source?

I use a 24 inch square, neatsfoot treated slab of leather and drape it over the lock area...

It's heavy enough to stay on, even during a strong zephyr...
