I'm really ready for a Crockett .32. I like the look and I like the feel, they shoulder perfect. What's the downside to them if any? I've heard they have a problem with cleanin'.

Pahaska,
I have shot my Crockett maybe 500 or
600 times and have never experienced any
prolems cleaning it.
snake-eyes :hmm:

There's a snake in the grass waiting for Crockett owners if they break a mainspring or even take the side plate out of the stock for cleaning. The spring is totally wrong for the lock and you could get into deep cacca replacing it yourself.

On the top leave theres a little lip that's supposed to engage a groove in the side plate. Way too thick, so it tends to slip out sideways.

On the side of the spring is a little tit that's supposed to engage a hole in the side plate. The tit's too big or the hole's too small.

As a result of all that, the spring sits canted when it's mounted.

None of that's a problem if you do a little inletting on side plate. But watcherbackside taking the sideplate out of the stock or putting it back in. The spring will jump out REALLY easy, and it's got a whole bunch of velocity when it's coming.

The spring cut loose on one of mine while taking the lock out of the stock. Blew a whole chunk out of the top of the stock extending well forward of the front lock bolt.

I sent an email to Traditions warranty shop 11 days ago and they still haven't given me the courtesy of a reply.

Yup, I'm leaking yellow water all over the place. Looks like their website contacts are worthless, but I've got to calm down a bit before picking up the phone.

If I need to rebuild a gun to solve the cleaning problems and lock problems, why not build one in the first place? If I didn't have time or skills for rebuilding or building, I'm sure going to buy another brand.

Really an neat rifle to handle and shoot, but beauty is skin deep on this one I think.

If I don't get satisfaction real soon, keep your eyes on the classified ads here. There'll be a used Crockett for sale cheap and another for parts. Call it collecting funds for a Cabelas Blue Ridge or a parts kit to build my own.

I would like a light barreled 32 too but not the Crockett. Very poor quality product, You'd think for a company that makes firearms they'd make a dependable product. I've handled a few Crockett 32's and everyone of them had something wrong with them. Hammers not lining up with the nipples, loose hammers or poor wood to metal fit. The barrels have a good finish but the lock you can throw in the crapper. I don't know anyone that hasn't had some type of a problem with them. Some people don't but they are the lucky ones. RMC make a good quality 32 with very good parts but it's alittle pricy. They build their rifles from other Companys' parts. Good barrels and very good locks, can't say I care for the shape of their stocks. But the metal to wood finish is good. If I was to buy a Crockett I'd have to replace the lock and triggers and correct the metal to wood finish, be better to build your own rifle. SSettle

I guess I'm a lucky one I just sold one .the only problem I had was the tang screw was threaded wrong and had to be tapped out and replaced.I took the lock out and never had any spring let loose on me.I also had no reply from traditions when trying to get a replacement tang screw.I'm not overly Impressed with the company :shake:

Mine has some production quality issues that if I had bought it at a store would not have and it has the cleaning problem which I have solved with changing methodes.

I love my little .32

BrownBear, give them a call. I've dealt with their customer service a few times and they were helpful, efficient and fast shipping me the parts I needed.

As for the Crockett. The problem I remember hearing about was a breechplug that didn't fit the bore right. If I remember correctly, it had a gap near the breech that snagged patches and let fouling build up. I hope they get that problem solved. I want one bad, but I'm not buying until I know the problem has been addressed.

Sound's like a fun rifle huh? Who names these anyway, Crockett, :youcrazy: more like Crock of C........ :rotf: . Fred :hatsoff: oh and good luck.

I really like mine. This time of year, when most of the open seasons are for smaller game, It comes down to a choice between the light .32 rifle or the much heavier .56 smoothbore shotgun. When I think about lugging it around all day, the Crockett usually gets to go. I like to combine sports, and I do a lot of long distance hiking. This allows be to scout potential new hunting areas at the same time. If a season is open, I can tote the Crockett along without feeling like I am carrying too much stuff. My little .22 auto used to fill this role. I have not picked it up since i got the .32

I have not had any of the quality problems others mentioned

I have a crockett rifle I like it just fine for the price you cant expect a custom rifle there are a few things wrong with it but nothing i cant fix i worked on the breach plug i removed it and put a shim in to take care of the patch getting stuck

I sent one in for warranty Repair and it took months of phone calls (sights was milled 10 degrees off)and got a cull replacement. The Hammer was bent so far let it was hitting the wood. The response was sorry want a new hammer, send the rifle back. I bought a new rifle and replaced with seconds that was personally packed by the manager of the the warranty dept. I had to buy another hammer but fit it my self. I wouldn't put too much faith in the warranty dept.I learned to use a 22 caliber brush to clean the breech to keep from having stuck patches. But after the bugs got worked out, I can shoot a 3 shoot cloverleaf at 35 yards. Was my Valentines day present from my wife, if it was't for that I would have sold it. She likes better than my T/C cherokee, sorta like marriage gets better with time.

Hey peashooter,
Best hold on to that wife of your's. My wife bought me a .54 GPR flint kit for Christmas. By the way, what part of Bama are you? I'm moving to Anniston this spring or early summer. Glad you finally got that Crockett straightened out.

i like snake eyes have shot my crockett well into the 500 round range and had no cleaning trouble ive also not experienced any other trouble with it except for a badly twited factory ram rod and some wood scraps behind the lock mortise ive noticed, and asked this before with no response, there are 2 versions of this gun which versions do you guys own that have trouble and which have no trouble? one has a single lock bolt, curved old style set triggers and the rear sight is a tad further back. this one was also listed on track of the wolf as having a hooked breech. the gun i have has 2 lock bolts somewhat different lock plate pattern and standard new style set triggers. ive often wondered if perhaps one was earlier or later model i got mine in january of 2001. anyone notice these differences aside from myself? i love my gun and have had no trouble with it i changed my upper thimbles to figured brass ones i scavenged from an old cva ky rifle stock and have stripped and re finished the stock to age it some plus did a "french grey" finish to the lock and barrel heres a couple pics not great but my wifes at work and im not as good with the camera as she is

Not a bad looking rifle! Makes me want to get one right now, but the wife says I have to wait til this summer. I guess I'll wait. After all, she got me a GPR kit for Christmas.

I live South of Montgomery , glad to know you moving back south. I did my time in California too. Gonna keep my wife :) she buys me guns and I buy her Shiney Objects. :winking:
Deer Creek is carrying the Crockett in Kit form, both Rifle and Pistol, was told be available in April. Would cure a lot of manufacturing problems on a personal level in my opinion.
I have the Crockett with two Screws in lock, that is all I ever seen. Does the hooked barrel exist, I was told it never made made it to be manufactured. Who has got one, also was thinking about converting one over to flint anybody thought of that or been there done that?

joe the one i saw with a hooked breech was on track of the wolf those guys are pretty good with thier descriptions when i bought mine it came from cabelas and i gave i think 200 for it it too was advertised as having a hooked breech but dosent i hated the black thimbles so i dumped them its interesting to read bout these guns cause of the wide range of opinions on them mine has shot as good as and a lot better than a pedersoli my buddy bought from cabelas at the same time another thing i did do to mine was pack the lock with polishing compound from my dremel tool and just cock and release it for while everyday till the action smoothed out some then i naval jellied the barrel i posted a pic of that
