Interesting crosshatched pattern popped out on this one:

Just thought you'd like to see it. That's all I got. yellowhammer out.
 
This appears to be nearly quarter sawn and has the look of sugar maple. Stripes or curl are vertical of course and long grain from growth rings runs along the length. If you stained with iron nitrate, there's a good chance it's sugar maple due to the lighter color. Looks pretty!
 
Thanks Jim. Yep, I used your iron nitrate. I wanted a lighter color this time to get out of my dark wood rut, and I got it I guess :).

Jekyll/Hyde - chatoyance effect makes it go dark in the shade:
