I recently put together a CVA Kentucky rifle kit in percussion. Its accuracy is good but the lock I've had to tinker with because the tumbler was binding against the side plate. I'm considering converting it to flint but I don't have any experience with their flintlocks. I suppose I could put an L&R replacement lock on it but it would cost more. Any of you guys have experience With CVA flintlocks-good,bad or indifferent?

Thanks

Don

With most import flintlocks it may be a manure shoot as to how well the lock will work, sometimes it is a matter of metalergy and sometimes it is geometry the first is fixable the later can be a nightmare, I would suggest waiting untill you can upgrade to a good quality flinter with a good lock from Chambers or one of the other domestic lockmakers. I have went afield and done battle with the funky flintlocks and it is nearly enough to sour one on the concept completely.

The old cliche' "Lock, Stock, & Barrel" is the way to look at any gun.

- Lock: the single most important part of any ML. A good looking fancy whittled stock with metal embedded in it won't help you if the gun won't fire.

- Barrel: I'd rather have a middlin' barrel with a high quality lock; again, what good is a great barrel if the gun won't fire.

- Stock: A pine 2"X4" with a middlin' barrel and a great lock banded to it is preferable to a premium yadda yadda stock with a Roman nose and scroll work if the thing won't go off.

CVA flinters are a manure shoot. Some folks swear by them, some folks swear at them, the rest of us have to completely rework them before they are just moderately aggrevating.

IMHO
