I just bought a used CVA Hawken in .50, in good condition generally, but there appears to be a problem with the setup of the set triggers and sear bar because the hammer will only stay on full cock if the triggers are set before cocking the hammer. Otherwise it just brushes over the sear.

Ia anyone able to point out previous posts on correcting this kind of problem?

Fairly common,
The trigger mortice has gotten soft and/or someone has over tightened the screws and the trigger is too deep in the mortice,
First, some CVA locks have a screw on the tumbler to adjust sear engagement, be sure that's not set too deep if it's there.
The CVA uses a through stock bolt from the tang to the trigger plate. loosen that screw and try to tap it down a bit, pushing the trigger plate lower, some have two extra screws holding the trigger plate in, a shim of some sort placed between the stock and the FRONT of the trigger plate will hold the trigger plate lower.
My Mountain Rifles was so wore out I epoxy bedded the area and re-inlet the trigger to a proper depth.

Also backout your 2 little screws on the trigger plate, one is behind the rear trigger and the other is between the triggers. If they are screwed in to deep they won't let the triggers set and your hammer won't hook up! Back them out about halfway and then try it!

Hello, I'm new to this forum, so I'm very glad to see a post that I can relate to lol- just a few days ago actually I had the same situation as you described. My brother in law bought a used CVA Hawken .50, good condition except it wouldn't hold full cock. Well, if you take the lock off the rifle you will see that there is a little set screw between the bridle and the lock plate which adjusts the amount of "catch" of the trigger sear in the notch in the tumbler. Back this screw off until your trigger catches the tumbler, but not too much as that will cause a hard trigger pull. You want it to set just on the edge of the full cock notch, enough so it won't fall off inadvertantly(very dangerous), but not all the way into the notch- hope this helps- if it doesn't, please tell how you wind up fixing it :hmm:
