Greetings...

Fixing up a used CVA "Hawken" pistol, .50 caliber. Does anybody have experience with this item? Were there any safety issues? Is 700 kp a strong enough barrel, or should this gun be used as a paperweight? Don't see much CVA stuff around like I used to. Any experiences would be welcome. Thanks, guys.

CVA guns are pretty good shooters for the money. They haven't been known for any safety issues that I'm aware of. If it's in good shape, I'd say take it out and shoot it! A heckuva lot of folks own and shoot them without any problems.

I have several CVA pistols that are at least 30 years old (Colonial, Mountain, Kentucky, Derringer). All are still good, strong shooters.

Condition is important on any used gun, and if you do not feel qualified to inspect the bore I suggest you solicit an opinion from a gunsmith as to safety. At a minimum I would inspect the bore carefully with a bore light.

The CVa guns as many have said were good shooters but they do not make them any more only the new fangled inline stuff that we love to hate. I know i want to find one like yours of a few of the other ones some day to fill what I wanted and did not get back when in the 80's

I may be a hair off, but I think that 700 Kp is equal to about 10,000 PSI which should be adaquate with pistol loads.

Actually, there has been great debates and discussions about that marking.
Many say the barrels marked with this proof marking are tested at a much higher value but the Spanish marking law says something about marking it with the 700 Kp stamp.
I'm not sure that is true but I have not heard of a gun with this marking blowing up unless the owner put smokeless powder in it.
