I have a opportunity to buy a CVA Hawken type rifle. I was told by my uncle it only needs a drum and nipple to be functional. I can get it for $25.00. It's .50 cal. I guess what I need to know is if it's worth the trouble to fix this rifle? If so how much cash will it take? Where can I get the parts. I plan on shooting PRB in it so I need to see if the rate of twist is ok. As far as I can tell it is in really good shape except for the drum and nipple needing replacement du to rusted in nipple.(Someone trashed the whole thing trying to take out the nipple.)

dixie gun works can set you up with a new nipple and drum for about 7 bucks. the twist is probly 1 in 48. should shoot round balls ok and conicals as well.
If you pass at 25 bucks, let me know andI willbuy it! these are OK guns and will serve you well.

you cansearch this site and find info on installing and/or aligning the drum to the hammer...simple procedure. metric threads by the way.

Mak,

The price is right if the barrel is serviceable. Run a patch down the barrel to see if it's rough. It's possible that it was shot and then put away without cleaning. That may be why someone had so much trouble getting the drum out. GW

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtin! He has enough guns. :rotf:
I'll buy it if you pass. I need one for my son, I've got him hooked on muzzleloading.

I have one of these rifles. Like has been said, very serviceable and will serve you well, even if it aint the prettiest or most PC thing out there. I'd say for $25, i'd get it even if it wasnt fixable to use as a learning gun if nothing else. And these guys know what they're talking about as far as ease and cost of fixing it back up goes. I'd get it if i were you. Mine has been used as a learning gun fixing this and that, and trying different things, and i didnt get mine for $25 either. I'd jump on it if i were you. Considering what it is and what it was intended to do, it is a great little rifle, and will bring meat home everytime if you do your part. By the way, it is 1 in 48" as was said above.

The lock is worth more than that. I need the stock if it turns out to be a junker! My Hawken stock is cracked pretty bad.

I've had mine for ohhh 14 years now and it still works great. In fact that is the gun I carry hunting, she's light & accurate @ 100 yards.
Which reminds me, the load from ML season needs to be touched off.
Regards Bill

You can't go wrong at that price if the bore is ok. even a little rust can be scoured out with a 3M scotchbrite pad on a jag if it ain't. I've got one, I'm taking it to the range in awhile. Mine takes deer at 50 yds every year.

I wondered how long that was going to take! better to shoot than take score!
...maybe "ralphie" will get that "red ryder range model" under the tree!
until then IF you like, Patrick can shoot my 50 if he desires, its nothing to bring it along.

Scott, you and all the members here,
Have a great christmas!

You can fix your cracked stock with acouple drywall screws and a good water proof glue. Give it a try what do you have to lose. I repaired mine afew years ago. you should be able to repair it by going up under the trigger guard if it's broke at the wrist.ssettle

It's easily worth $25. Even if you just toss out the barrel and buy a replacement, you'd still have a fine starter rifle for a great total price.

Don't let the cheaper entry price these rifles were sold for fool you. I have 6 early CVA's - all still great shooters even after decades of use.

The crack is length wise down the ramrod channel. It has been repaired with bedding compound for years. I touched off a bit too much 3f 777 under a Hornady 385. The wedge spread the stock under the recoil enough to pull one side, crack the ramrod channel, and cause minor cracks and problems around both plates. Definately not the guns fault! 777 was new and we were experimanting to see just what it would and would not do. You touch a heavy charge of it off under a 385, you will not want to do it often! I have a replacement pre-carve hawken stock here and I have just about got the barrel bedded in it, The short Hawken barrel looks kind of funny. I will need to cut the stock down or I might put the Mountian rifle barrel and hardware in it. It is more appropriate for a two wedge setup. Thanks for the help tho!

IM LOOKING FOR THE STOCK. Its a CVA hunter hawkens.

I have a 54 barrel in the closet that just need a stock and convert over to flint later. Think about it. :hmm:

Ok guys, you twisted my arm. I bought the rifle today. Other than a good scrubbing and a drum and nipple, all it needs is a front sight blade. Where can I get one of those?

Track of the Wolf. Probably Dixie, too, but I don't have one of their catalogs at hand.

Rebel...
I know where you are going with this! :hmm:

wouldnt that be a find for 25 plews!

It sure would. Heck, he could probably double his money on it. Maybe triple it. I would give him that much for it my ownself.
