Hi
I am trying to locate a ramrod for my CVA kentucky 45 Cal pistol. It has a 9 3/4 barrel. The pistol I believe was made by Jukar. I have tried to contact Traditions twice with no responce.
Dixie and Track of the wolf don't carry one. Haven't been able to contact CVA yet but what I understand is they don't carry parts for muzzle loaders any more. I guess if I can get any help this site is where I will get it. Great site lots of know how.
Thanks
Fred

try Deer Creek, you can find their phone # posted here many times, if they don'y have one, make it yourself. It is a simple project.

You might consider buying a hardwood dowel at your local hardware store.
Use your hack saw to cut it to the length you need.
Putting on a coat of stain or even just rubbing in some black or brown shoe polish might darken it enough for you.

I normally would not recommend using one of these dowels for a ramrod but that is because for a rifle, where a long length is needed they can break or split and cause great harm to the shooters hand.

For a pistol on the other hand, the short length and moderate forces required to seat a patched ball make the use of one of these dowels possible without much danger.

I have thought of making my own or even buying a longer one and cutting it but wasn't sure I could get the proper brass ends.
I haven't tried Deer Creek yet Thanks

If you have the means of measuring the inside diameter of the ramrod thimble or the entry hole for the ramrod in the stock so that you know the size of dowel that will fit it you can then buy the dowel.

If you buy, lets say, a 5/16 diameter dowel you can also buy a piece of 5/16 diameter brass tubing.

Cut off a length of the tubing that is about 1/2 to 3/4 long.

Cut the dowel to the length you need and then lay it on a table. Lay the cut off tubing along side the dowel lining up the ends. Use a utility knife or very sharp knife to mark the wood at the length of the brass tube.
Place the knife on the mark and roll the wooden dowel, scoring the wood with the knife about 1/32 deep. Then use a flat file to file the wooden area up to the scored line on the dowel down to fit inside the tubing. (Keep the dowel on the table and roll it while filing. This will keep the amount of wood being removed fairly constant).
Press the tube onto the dowel and stain it.

Although this will leave the wood exposed at the end it will still be functional and it will look pretty good too. :)

Well, as luck would have it I am just finishing up a kit (given to me by a friend who had it for years and never finished it) for a CVA 45 cal., Jukar-made compression pistol. I have the original ram rod (I believe it is original). The rod is .3" in diameter (with calipers), but I measured the depth of the barrel at 9 1/2". The rod has about 20-24, shallow flutes cut down the length of it (don't know if that is normal). If you would like more info, let me know.
