I bought this rifle a bit ago, the lock was bad so I installed an L&R lock a couple weeks ago, it flat out shoots. I decided I wanted to refinish the stock, it was very blonde in color. So I decided to re shape a few things like the area around the lock and the comb. I got started this evening, and worked on the area around the lock. It had a gap from the stock to the lock so I cut a shim and glued it in. I have no direction as this is the first time I’ve ever taken a wood rasp to a gun stock! I appreciate any advice given. Someday I’d like to build a rifle and I thought this was a good rifle to get a little experience on.

Nice lines, you certainly did thin it down.
That's a great accent at the wrist/comb transition,
It would be easier to see your accomplishments if the photo was presented for us to see as horizontal

I was able to spend an hour on the stock this afternoon, I worked on the comb and cheek rest. I love the looks of the cheek rest on the Browning Mountain Rifle so that’s what I was aiming for. I’m using rasps that were my great grandfathers, he was a carpenter by trade. I have more than 100 rasps and files that were his. I get a kick out of using them.

This afternoon I worked on the other lock panel, sanded some and filed the nose cap to match the profile of the stock. Im really enjoying working on the stock and changing it to what I like.

After you get the barrel back on it and Before finishing the stock. Shoulder it for cheek feel. Trim the cheek weld if it feels the least bit uncomfortable otherwise you will regret it every time you Shoulder it.

I did this prior to staining, we were gone this weekend, I was able to get it stained before we left on Friday. Sunday night I got the first coat of Tru Oil on it, I got the second coat on this evening after work. It feels and looks good thus far.
